Spa

By Stephanie Ila Silver-Silberstein

As I made my way up the winding driveway to the main house of the Mayflower Inn and Spa, I immediately felt a rush of calm come over me. I could practically feel my internal rhythm slow down as I entered the beautifully lush and serene environment. Located less than 2 hours from New York City in charming Washington, Connecticut, this pinnacle of luxury is the perfect antidote to a stressful New York City lifestyle.

The main house is part country house and part traditional manor. After checking in at reception where my husband and I were greeted by the well-mannered staff, we unwound on the porch in wicker rocking chairs with cups of tea in hand. At the main house, we dined in a pub style room and enjoyed a delicious brunch. I highly recommend their famous Vanilla Bean and Ricotta Pancakes.

The gorgeous spa house is equally relaxing but in a totally different way from the main house and room accommodations. The immaculately designed modern spa enveloped us in shades of white and is decorated with soft feminine touches. The high ceilings, natural light, mosaic tiles and creamy-toned furniture made me want to start renovations on my apartment, it was so beautiful. Before going in for our spa treatments, my husband and I took a dip in the indoor pool. The immense windows revealed luscious landscaping and nature and made us feel connected to the outdoors.

Donning our soft, fluffy robes, we made our way to the sun-filled garden room, sunk into the comfy white chaise lounges, took in the view of Blue Heron Pond (a staff member even pointed out a deer in the distance), and awaited our spa therapists. When they arrived, we were led past the state-of-the-art gym, pilates and yoga studios and into our treatment rooms. Suffice it to say, we emerged after our massages (prenatal for me, hot stone for my husband) totally relaxed and rejuvenated.

After indulging in a decadent dinner in the main dining room, we returned to our room. Not surprisingly, the room was designed to perfection with rich fabrics and a canopy bed. All of the Mayflower rooms are designed to make you feel as though you’re in somebody’s home (or perhaps estate) rather than at a hotel. With the flip of a switch, a fireplace was ablaze and my husband and I enjoyed a cozy and romantic night, feeling millions of miles away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

The Mayflower Inn & Spa is truly in a class of its own (and truth be told, the cost of your stay will prove that point – although there are last-minute and weekday specials available). Every single detail has been thought of to make each guest’s stay as stress-free and luxurious as possible. Whether you take advantage of the fitness classes and area activities like biking, golf and antiquing, or simply fill your day with food, wine and spa treatments, the Mayflower Inn & Spa is the perfect destination to find both luxury and tranquility.
