Metro Mama & Metro Baby

By Yasmin Jorge

While the long sunny days of summer are over, New York moms and our daughters are relishing the fall and winter months ahead. Why? Cooler weather gives us a multitude of fashion options! In super hot weather we can’t wear much – and we certainly reached scorching 90° temperatures here. Colder weather lets us happily layer on wonderfully rich and textured fabrics, fetching from head to toe.

At the museum with mom and then dinner with dad, Olive Juice Kids has a lovely line of autumn chic clothing to perfectly outfit stylish girlie girls. They will look and feel beautiful during any upscale adventure! The current fall line is inspired by the bold color palette found on the streets of Paris — mulberry, peacock, chrome and more reflect this festive new season.

The marine Camilla dress is so sweet, featuring exquisite details such as empire ruffle, three-button cuff, back buttons, and Peter Pan collar. It is 100% cotton fine wale corduroy and lined in linen. Olive Juice Kids combines stellar delicate craftsmanship and functionality. Don’t worry – your precious babies can play as everything is washable!

Olive Juice Kids is an avid and ongoing supporter of Soles 4 Souls (http://www.soles4souls.org), a nonprofit that provides shoes and apparel to needy communities. For example, Olive Juice Kids donated over 300 pairs of unworn shoes and several 100 new clothing pieces to help with the Haitian relief efforts.

I am thrilled to have found Skysprout, a funky retro clothing line with a modern twist. Founder and Designer Heather Houston started the company because of “love and obsession for fashion for herself and her children.” And I definitely feel the excitement in her fall collection – the garments are beautifully constructed, made in classic shapes, however made current with bright colors and lovely bold prints.

You feel like someone who loves your child made her precious outfit. No details are spared.

Standout pieces were the coats: The olive green trapeze pea coat with ruffle trim (even on sleeves) and an outrageously fun candy stripped lining; and a chevron pattern red coat with sweet peter pan collar, front puckered pockets, banded sleeves and a decadent quilted red lining were simply to die for. I must add even the buttons on these coats were eye-catching.

Other favorites included the classic sailor dress with peter pan collar, front button placket and contrast piping; a delicately ruffled, button-front, short sleeved printed blouse; and a classic fit denim trouser with adjustable waistband, back flap pockets and detailed light blue stitching throughout.

The Skysprout Collection makes getting dressed stylishly easy. Pieces can be mixed and matched, and transition seamlessly from casual school day to formal nighttime festivity. Everything is high quality 100% soft comfortable cotton and washable.

Skysprout is involved in charitable projects that serve children in need. The company has worked with nonprofits to supply clothing to those who lost their homes in the floods of the Philippines, and in Pakistan where many families were displaced from their homes. Skysprout also helps the Hearts of Gold Foundation, a nonprofit that aids homeless children in New York.

If only my daughter and I could swap wardrobes. She already wants to wear my shoes, yet it’s impossible for me to borrow her Skysprout coat. Visit http://www.skysprout.com to feast your eyes and buy!

For warm and classy sweaters smart for day or night, Moms should know Bambeeno Cashmere. This company is indeed unique: Products are made with 100% natural cashmere — the fibers are farmed in Inner Mongolia by herders whose goats are allowed to roam the regional remote mountain pastures and feed on spring fed water and herbal grasses. The herders and weavers patiently wait for the best fibers and harvest only the finest hair.

Once harvested, the fibers are then dyed with an eco-friendly dye. Bambeeno sweaters are spun using Italian spinning machines to create a refined product that is as luxurious as it is environmentally conscious. And yes, they can be hand washed with either Wool & Cashmere Wash or Baby Detergent from The Laundress™.

And I agree with the result of all the intense production: Bambeeno Cashmere is extravagantly soft, yet sturdy, knitwear with timeless designs for infants through toddlers. The clothes are as special as our daughters we hold dear. Visit (http://www.bambeenocashmere.com).

Cute and cool on exclusive play dates – that’s what trendy girls are in Paul Frank Industries (PFI) casual sportswear. Featuring the popular Julius Monkey, PFI continues to offer wonderfully constructed, creative clothing sturdy enough to meet the demands of tough playground activity. My daughter was inspired by the carnation pink Rainbow Hoodie with plentiful details, including neat Julius zipper pull, heart-lined hood, kangaroo pockets (she’s learned the joy of pockets!), and plenty of images – monkeys, clouds, hearts, and rainbows on the front and back. Everything is 100% comfortable cotton and washable. And as a Mom, I’d wear his fun clothes too!

PFI gives back to the community extensively. The company partners with many philanthropic endeavors that directly benefit children, the arts and the environment, such as the Festival of Children, Boarding for Breast Cancer, The Elton John AIDS Foundation, First Book, and The Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles.

Check out PFI’s extensive apparel and accessories collections, Paul Frank Kids (sizes 2-16) and Small Paul (0-24Months), at http://www.paulfrank.com and shop online or find a nearby store.

In addition, Payless is inspiring shoppers to show their support for breast cancer awareness with its 2010 Payless Breast Cancer Awareness charm bracelet to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure™, the world’s leading breast cancer advocacy organization. Since 2004, the sale of these bracelets have raised more than $3.6 million for breast cancer.

Payless has many giving programs to support important causes by selling unique and affordable items to shoppers, and then donating 100% percent of the net profits from item sales to a nonprofit partner. Payless makes no money from these programs; they are 100% philanthropic.

Visit http://www.Payless.com or Payless ShoeSource stores to buy shoes and Embrace the Cause bracelets. You will not hurt your wallets either!

Fashion “Must Have’s” For Our Little Girls:
1. Color – to accurately reflect the energy and enthusiasm of our children,
2. A great coat that must be warm and absolutely comfortable,
3. Layers, such as long sleeve t-shirts under short sleeve blouses, and leggings under mini skirts,
4. Prints – No matter the season, prints are fantastic. Colorful prints are always a great way to liven up an autumn outfit. Whether a floral print dress or lovely floral tunic is paired with velvet trousers or jacket, every day is brighter with fun prints,
5. Denim – dresses, trousers, and mini skirts — go with everything and every occasion.

Thanks for the advice, Mom Fashionista Heather Houston! We’re ready to shop now.
