Carolina Herrera presents Chic for Men:

This is a masculine scent thoroughly in keeping with its times. Its sensuous yet delightfully refined (almost restrained) quality reflects Ms. Herrera’s signature style. Chic is quite a study in contrasts. It lends a man the vibes of being creative yet disciplined, iconoclastic yet traditional, approachable yet sophisticated. Watery freshness in the top note (Fresh Watermelon and Iced Lemon!) combines with a warm middle note (Suede and Black Pepper Oil) and hints of spice and wood in the base note to achieve an extremely well-balanced bouquet.

Fabien Baron has crafted the equally chic container on the lines of an inkpot.

Suitable for all seasons and times of the day, except summer daytime. Fits with formal, semi-formal, and sprucely casual dressing and setting.

Exclusive launch in February 2005 at Saks Fifth Avenue Eau de Toilette Spray 2 fl oz $42; 3.4 fl oz $57

Calvin Klein brings Obsession Night

Sexy Tuscan Black Suede reappears in this fragrance, only this time with much greater force. Obsession Night would fit the description of a fine Cabernet Sauvignon – bold, potent, and full bodied with tantalizing hints of fruit and spice. The edible, gourmand top note (includes Pear and Cardamom) mixes with the lushness of suede and musk in the middle note to create a devastatingly sensual effect. The base note with its bitter-sweet quality, develops much slower and culminates as the night reaches its more intimate hours.

Pierre Dinand designed the round sculptured lines and the sensuous glass curves of the deep, midnight blue flacon. It is a modern interpretation of the Indian prayer stones in Calvin Klein’s collection.

Well suited for every night of the year; for out-on-the-town or intimate use.

Available in department stores in February 2005.

Davidoff Releases Echo Davidoff Limited Edition 2005

Très avant garde and existentialist – that is what I would call this space-agey liquid in its space-agey limited edition presentation. What should I talk about first, the liquid or the bottle? Well the fragrance came first, about year and a half ago…

It still has the same metallic freshness with a just a touch of emotion. The latter quality comes from white suede and a pinch of spice in the base note. These elements create a sense of intrigue after the initial gush of fresh liquid air has settled down – as if, a reminder that we need not be robots to celebrate the freedom and confidence in urban energy.

A product of the continued collaboration between Davidoff and world-renowned designer Karim Rashid, the Limited Edition bottle shows striking graphics of white lines. These enhance the biomorphic shape of the original container and the transparency of its mercury blue volume more than ever before.

Echo makes for great ‘city-wear.’ Although on first impression it suggests daytime use, it is a scent that depends more on your state of mind than on any external factor. In any case, the bottle can be admired at any time of the day or year.

Thierry Mugler’s B*Men

B*Men is not a scent for the faint at heart. Though much lighter than it’s predecessor A*Men, this fragrance still has a lot of fire and spice to it. Its opens with a burst of spicy green citrus but soon dries into a dark and very woody scent. It speaks to me with a confident worldly quality and a hint of challenge.

It lends itself better to winter and fall than to summer or spring, and is more suitable for larger social gatherings than small intimate settings.

Available at Bloomingdale’s, Neiman Marcus, Nordstom, and Saks Fifth Avenue.

Babor Eau de Toilette from Babor

Infused with a tangy sweetness, this sporty, fresh fragrance offers a smell different from all those other ‘sporty, fresh fragrances’ with their uniform, generic scent. A collection of citrus mixes with a bit of spice and spearmint to give it this richer character. However, it still retains its easy-to-wear, youthful attitude.

The EDT makes for a great all-purpose spray in any season. It is best used during the day. However, it could also work well for summer evenings in sexy, casual settings, such as, an outdoor cocktail party in the country.

Available at Nordstrom and exclusive spas.
