Metro Man & Metro Home

By Eric Capstick

“This is freakin’ good bacon!” I imagined one old friend, using his favorite adjective, saying when I served up a breakfast plate with Boss Hog Hickory Smoked Bacon from the good people at

This succulent and flavorful gourmet bacon, cured with brown sugar, can be found at a website that features an incredible array of bacon products. Among the 20 varieties of specialty bacons for sale is Rocco’s Private Reserve No Nitrite Bacon, which contains no preservatives of any kind. Another hickory-smoked favorite, Bourbon Street Cajun Style Bacon, reminded me of the spontaneous musicality in the streets of New Orleans during Jazz Fest there years ago. The inspiration for another of the treats at seems to have come from the North; Uncle Sam’s Cottage Style Bacon, a product that claims its own form of Canadian Bacon for the USA. Bacon Freak takes great pride in the high quality of its small production, artisan-style specialty bacons and has carved a growing niche by offering bacon products as gifts. Of course one always retains the option of “pigging out” and ordering some of this delectable breakfast fare for the home kitchen. The Bacon Freak’s minimum shipment includes two 16-ounce packages currently priced at $29.95.

Another section “Baconistas” will find appealing features a moist and flavorful bacon jerky that presents quite a contrast to more traditional dried beef jerky. I went for the Cajun Style Bacon Jerky to continue on a recent Bayou kick, but the Bacon Freak makes his jerky with all kinds of other seasonings as well. Jerky orders are now discounted at $9.95 with a second package priced at $6.95. There are also lots of specials and bulk discounts available on the site.

The Bacon Freak also supplies a wide variety of other meats and condiments through clubs or micro-sites within the domain. A sampling of these clubs include; BBQ Sauce, Ham, Jelly, Lobster, Olives and Olive Oil, Ribs, Salsa, Sausage and Steak. I can’t wait to try out some of the others but for now I am content to enjoy some of the best-damned country style bacon that I’ve ever tasted. Because this gourmet bacon contains none of the water that comes in mass-produced bacon, it is dry-cured, Bacon Freak products barely shrink at all when cooked. No more of the horror show on Sunday mornings caused by the shrinking bacon phenomenon; with Bacon Freak, what you see is what you get. When you’re checking out make sure to look over the variety of rubs that are offered for those who like to work in a marinade on a piece of meat from time to time.
