“Two Lane Blacktop” (1971), available on DVD, is one the best – and probably least known – road movies ever made. It features an oddball cast that includes singers James Taylor and Dennis Wilson, along with veteran character actors Warren Oates and Harry Dean Stanton. The film was out of circulation for years because of disputes over music rights. Now available on DVD, it was promoted by Universal Studios in 1971 as an answer to Columbia’s “Easy Rider” (1969). Originally released to less than enthusiastic reviews, it has since gained a cult classic status that is richly deserved. It’s not a date film, but if you’re interested in a glimpse at early 70′s action/adventure cinema on a rainy summer day, this one is definitely worth renting.
