With a decidedly sophisticated, continental trend in for this seasons menswear, fragrance is following suit. Here are two of the best contenders for your olfactory senses this fall.

Ralph Lauren’s Black Label, characterized by a leaner cut and trimmer lapels in its suits, is perfectly complemented by the new Ralph Lauren fragrance, Polo Black. Its distinctly sensual, yet sleek and energetic smell is that of an international man. Unusual notes such as iced mango, along with Spanish sage and accord, add a hint of the playful and fresh. At the base, you get patchouli noir, tonka bean, sandalwood, and timberol to give off a mysterious, sexy vibe.

The solid black flask packaging, topped with a silver cap and stamped with a polo pony accent – also in silver, is super-sleek and masculine. It will do its part for your dresser, as the juice will for your person.

Polo Black Eau de Toilette Spray ($47.50 for 2.5 oz; $65 for 4.2 oz) is available at Bloomingdales and other department and specialty stores this fall.

This season’s inclusion of more textured fabrics in the male wardrobe has been another trend much to my liking. And, nothing goes better with the romance of those velvet jackets than the new eau de toilette from Dior Homme, the result of Hedi Slimane’s collaboration with perfumer Olivier Polge. Wherefrom else can come a masculine fragrance, composed around the daring use of iris? Dior Homme speaks casual, youthful elegance – faultlessly refined. The powdery floral heart with vaguely bitter accents of cocoa sets it apart from all other current trends in men’s scents. It comes in a bottle that is highly architectural with a steel cylinder plunged into the body of the fragrance within.

Dior Homme Eau de Toilette Spray ($45 for 1.7 oz; $65 for 3.4 oz) is available at Nordstrom this October.

By the way, don’t forget to throw in that vintage leather handbag to complete the look!
