Metro Man & Metro Home

By PK Greenfield

Eau de Cologne has a history that dates back to the 1700s in Cologne, Germany. Italian immigrant and visionary, Giovanni Farina, created the first fragrance that reminded him of his childhood; it was herbal, floral and conjured up the fresh clean scent after a rainstorm. Since that first creation, the cologne industry has boomed like a thunderstorm.

The origins remain the same. Colognes are based in nature, evoke a sensual feeling and remind us of a pleasant memory.

Here are several of my suggestions, categorized by various male personalities in celebration of Father’s Day.

King of the Castle

Inside New York City’s Plaza Hotel is the home of one of the most infamous and historic perfumers in the world: Krigler. This family-owned business has been creating the most alluring and personalized colognes and perfumes since 1904.

I recently spoke with Ben Krigler at his landmark perfume house and he informed me that a recreation of one of his ancestor’s fragrances is being released on June 1, 2013. Krigler’s Hermitage Heritage 04 will be available just in time for Father’s Day.

Albert Krigler, a German chemist who moved to Russia for work, originally made this cologne in 1904. He wanted to create a masculine scent for the men of Russia. It was inspired by the lavish world of St. Petersburg and the name is an homage to the world-famous Hermitage Museum. The scent is woody and fresh with sandalwood and lavender. Ben said he tried to keep the scent as close to the original as possible but updated the ingredients a little for today’s man.

Since Krigler opened their doors, customers like Marlene Dietrich, John F. Kennedy, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Grace Kelly, and all the way up to today’s Hollywood celebrities, European royalty and the most influential people have crossed its threshold for their products.

If you have some free time or are visiting NYC, I encourage you stop by this shop in the Plaza Hotel. Your olfactory lobe will be pleased and inspired.

Pop’s Passion for Innovation

If your man is entrepreneurial, a real go-getter with an A+ type personality, here is a suggestive scent for him: Prada Luna Rossa. This cologne is named after the Italian sailboat racing syndicate and reflected in the design of the bottle.

Blended by Daniela Andrier, this cologne is manly with a wave of freshness that conveys energy and strength. The base is woody and the top notes have a burst of citrus — invigorating.

This cologne was launched in the winter but worth a revisit this spring.

It’s available at Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus and Lord & Taylor.

Mister Mysterious

Does your man text as much as his child? Is he tech smart, a tinkerer and gamer? If he’s a pensive, quiet man and brimming with mystique as well as a very dry sense of humor, I recommend the fragrance by designer Vince Camuto.

With hints of citrus, black pepper, sandalwood, vetiver and musk, this cologne has a bold and earthy scent that evokes an air of mystery.

This is for the man who glides with ease from doing yard work to attending a formal event at The Met. He may even send a text or play word games during intermission, in the cab, during dinner… Available at Macy’s and Lord & Taylor department stores.

Retro Dad

Is that your father playing air guitar in the living room while listening to music from the 60s, 70s, 80s, etc.? He’s not stuck in a certain decade, he celebrates them even when you suggest that he stop flipping the collar up on his polo shirts. He has a wacky sense of wit, a down-to-earth sensibility and a loveable disposition.

This spring Lacoste celebrates 80 years of innovation and re-invention along with the launch of their latest cologne, Eau de Lacoste L.12.12 Noir.

Inspired by the magical time of day we call dusk and the classic black polo shirt, this scent captures the calmness of a warm summer evening. I think this is the perfect scent for a man who takes his playtime very seriously.
