It started with a silicone muffin mold – as soon as I realized how much easier it is to clean a silicone pan than a metal pan and saw how muffins pop right out of the mold, I wanted to inject silicone into my kitchen wherever possible. Most types of silicone kitchen products are heat resistant and temperature safe to 500 degrees Fahrenheit, can be wiped clean with a damp sponge, are non-stick, non-abrasive, stain and odor resistant, dishwasher-,refrigerator-, freezer- and microwave oven-safe, can be bent and folded and come in great colors. This is great stuff!

The Essentials by HIC silicone pot grabber offers ease of use of a pot holder and some of the hand protection of an oven mitt plus it doubles as a cute hand puppet!

A charming Honeycomb Trivet from The Essentials by HIC protects kitchen surfaces from hot pots and looks cheery and stylish to boot.

Say goodbye to burnt pie crusts when you use Mrs. Anderson’s Baking Silicone Pie Crust Shield. No more fumbling with foil (mine usually fell off or didn’t cover completely), simply place the pie crust shield on the pie to protect the crust from burning, wash and use time and again.

The Silicone Flip Measuring Spoon Set from Mrs. Anderson’s Baking is a perfect marriage of form and function. The stainless steel handles combined with silicone bowls in pretty colors are high style and because the 4 spoons are hinged together at the hanging ring, you never have to worry about any of the spoons going missing.

Available online at Broadway Pandhandler and at Fish’s Eddy 889 Broadway, (212) 420-9020

I must admit to spatula abuse. More than one of my plastic spatulas have misshapen, semi-melted edges apparently from being forced to work in frying pans too hot for them to handle. The Super Silicone Fish Spatula from Elizabeth Karmel Kitchen Friends is heat resistant to 500 degrees Fahrenheit, dishwasher safe, and can be used indoors or outdoors when grilling or sautéing fish. It’s large enough to flip a whole fish and fish filets, has beveled edges and an off-set 2-inch neck that makes it easy to slide the spatula under the fish and a long coated handle to keep your hands away from the heat. This is one spatula that’s made to last.

Not everything silicone needs to be able to withstand high temperatures. Stretch’n Twist Silicone Bag Ties by The World’s Greatest take advantage of the great flexibility and bright colors of silicone. These adorable, brightly colored silicone bands securely hold the necks of bags and other items closed simply by wrapping the band around the gathered neck of a bag and pulling the tab with a face on one end under the tab on the other end.

Available online at Amazon and at S. Feldman Housewares 1304 Madison Avenue @ 92nd Street, (212) 289-7367
