Ever wonder when and why this tradition called Father’s Day came about?
Well, the governor of the U.S. state of Washington proclaimed the nation’s first “Father’s Day” on July 19, 1910. However, it was not until 1972, 58 years after President Woodrow Wilson made Mother’s Day official, that the day became a nationwide holiday in the United States. Imagine how many Polo Shirts, ties, socks and golf balls have been sold since then.
We’re going to mix it up a bit this year with gifts for the contemporary dad.
Every young dad has their hands full with a baby or two plus house chores and a career. It’s hard enough to find the time to relax let alone shop for suits, pants and shirts, especially tailor made ones. Luckily, I discovered Frank De Jackmo’s PointClickTailor.com a few months ago and really admire his concept and the quality of his apparel.
With PointClickTailor.com and a tape measure, Dad is on his way to dapperness from the comfort of his home — the website walks you thru the process with easy-to-follow videos. It literally took me minutes to get my exact measurements. After that, Dad can choose the garment(s) and a beautiful selection of fabrics. With just a few clicks, the order is processed and a couple of weeks later Dad receives his clothing at home or office. His measurements remain on file for future purchases. How cool is that? As cool as your pop!
For suits, I recommend the Bayberry two-piece in gray and lavender check. I’m also a fan of the Manchester True Blue Gingham Shirt. Dad can be rockin’ the Aberdeen Beige Suit Pants this summer. Any tailor or haberdasher worth their salt will tell you that fit is the most important part for men to look their very best. Clothing purchased off the rack simply doesn’t make the cut, especially for the #1 Dad.

Dad needs a drink!
I recently attended an event at the Conrad New York Hotel in Battery Park. The fine people from Rémy Martin informed us of the company’s long heritage in the Cognac region of France. We also had several tastings of their fine libations. If Dad has an inclination to imbibe on occasion and he only chooses the bottle from the tippy top-shelf, a bottle of cognac from Rémy Martin is the perfect present.
Dad will be impressed to know that his bottle of cognac started back in 1724. The vintner prides itself on their Centaur logo on every bottle and the aging process is between 10 to 37 years.
The hotel entrance and lobby, in my opinion, is spectacular. Father will be impressed, pleased and satiated in Atrio Wine Bar Restaurant.
Rémy Martin offers a collection of cognac and new cocktails. My favorite was the XO Excellence; the cocktails are also exceptional.
So your dad is playful, hip and fashionable. One extra gift you can present him with that will remind him of you every day he wears it is The Manlet. Yes, this company makes all types of bracelets for men at every price point. Diana Kauffman Designs incorporates interesting textures, colors and the finest materials and they’re all made in the U.S.A. He’ll like that. The Manlet styles are masculine, durable and the perfect gift for the artistic and fashion-forward father. They also make beautiful bracelets for women too (buy one or two for him and you).

The Distinguished Dad
Let me tell you about MagnaReady.
Maura Horton created a “stress free shirt” for her husband who struggles with Parkinson’s affliction. Her ingenuity is not only functional for fathers dealing with difficult physical issues she also nailed it in regards to making a fine, fashionable garment with a purpose.
Maura’s philosophy is “Getting dressed shouldn’t be a stressful task – living with a disability is hard enough.” The idea behind her principle is simple and ingenious — the buttons are actually magnets. It is so easy to dress or undress with little hand movement and no fussing over button loops. Above all the quality and collection are, in my book, superior. I recommend the Pinpoint White Oxford and the Blue Gingham Check Oxford. This gift will make dad’s life better. For saucier dads, it’s like easy access clothing. Oh la la!
