Going from overheated rooms to artic exteriors has been one of the horrifying tests of this season, a disaster for your skin’s balance and an invitation for runny noses and colds for your kids. As the last weeks of winter finally loom and in spite of some moments of more gleeful weather, you still need help to get through the freezing relapses that are part of any pre Spring beginning. So here are some products that I have used this season to help me and my kids pull through the last days of winter.
First of all, to keep my kids’ hands germ free, the best hand sanitizer I discovered this year is the new Veripur, which is both a moisturizer and a hand sanitizer. I have never been able to tolerate those alcohol based, gel hand sanitizers that turn the palms of the hands into parched cardboard. Veripur, on the other hand, protects your hands for up to 4 hours from 99.9 % of germs with the active ingredient of Benzethonium Chloride mixed with Jojoba and Grape seed oil and other emollients in a smooth creamy base. Available in drugstores and at http://www.veripur.com
Mama Mio O.Mega Wonder-Full Balm
Another little bottle I keep in my bag is the Mama Mio O.Mega Wonder-Full Balm, a rescue balm, packed with Omega 3, 6 and 9 in a beeswax base to mega-moisturize anything from lips to red nose in Siberian-like weather. Moisturizers just can’t face the music in these steep temperatures and this balm is like an extra jacket for my face. I also put it on my kids’ lips and rub it on their knuckles, noses and palms when we go sledding. It’s petrolatum and colorant free so that pregnant and nursing women can safely use it. For my morning shower, I use a low lather formula like MamaMio’s O.Mega Moisturizing Shower Cream with essential oils because I tend to stay longer under the hot water in winter. The cost is that I strip my body of all its oils and disrupt its Ph balance. But a low lather formula such as this one moisturizes with Aloe Vera, Sweet Almond Oil, Chamomile and Arnica Extract so my skin feels less like a dried fruit when I get out. It is Sodium Laureth and Lauryl Sulphate free. Both are available at http://www.mamamio.com
To help warn off colds, kids need a good source of vitamins. My kids are very fussy when it comes to the taste and feel of their vitamins so it was a relief to discover these new cherry-tasting chews by Arbonne. These chews have 15 essential vitamins and minerals as well as calcium to support the overall needs of growing kids. One in the morning and their body is fit for all their winter tasks.
To feel better when they are stuck in bed with a cold, the new Orange Pops by Soothie Suckers made from purified water and natural flavors from botanical extracts such as Echinacea Root, Schisandra Berries, Goldenseal, Chinese Ginseng and Licorice Root are a great help. Made with only natural fruit in them with no added sugar or artificial flavors, they taste really good when your throat hurts and you need to boost your immune system up. Sock-a-Bye Baby Spa Socks
Of course at the end of the day, a warm plush pair of socks feels well earned and helps sweeten the winter bitterness. I pull on the Mommy Plusheez of the super soft and cozy Sock-a-Bye Baby Spa Socks collection. Two pairs for you and two matching pairs for your baby. Non-binding and perfectly plush with slip-free tread, they are the most cuddly things on your toes imaginable. The socks come in adult and baby sizes but the adult sizes fit children’s feet too.
