Metro Mama & Metro Baby

By Yasmin Jorge

I had the pleasure of seeing the current Holiday Collection, in addition to the Spring Fashion Preview 2011 for popular maternity brands, A Pea in the Pod™ and Motherhood Maternity™. Styles were in-step with the trends seen on the runways of this year’s New York Fashion Week. So Mommies-to-be, you’ll be able to celebrate your more womanly shape like any stunning catwalker! Here’s your inside scoop.

A Pea in the Pod:
The trend for the holiday season is all about drama and flair — sequin embellishments, lace trim and overlays, and animal prints make you more Super Mama than you already are. My favorite was a long
black cocktail dress with jewel and metal shoulder and back details. Made of soft jersey, the gown drapes and lies sumptuously on the body, and the side zipper makes it easy to slip into. High-end designers ABS, Black Halo, Divine Life of Reilly, Sanctuary, and Velvet are also providing elegant and comfortable frocks, only available through A Pea in the Pod.

Another winter trend will keep you warm — chunky knits and heavy sweaters with toggle buttons, and slub knits that are comfortable soft cotton and breathable. The Holiday/ Winter Collections are available now.

For the Spring, A Pea in the Pod will deliver small collections every two to three weeks.

Everything is exciting and will be available between January – February 2011:

• Fem Utility combines structured soft and edgy pieces. Think delicate feminine details paired back with a military feel, such as a girly cardigan with pretty details and a distressed boyfriend jean in one look.

• Icy Floral brings pretty florals, along with dreamy colors, such as cosmetic pinks and dusty lilac, to garments with romantic flow and drape. Details include corsage necklines and lingerie inspired chiffon and lace trims, rosettes and embroidery.

• Graphic Statement offers revamped stripe patterns, in swimwear too, and cowl necks and ruching.

• Cruise Line includes swimwear.

• Inner Bliss is the action line that also features ruching. Reebok is an exclusive designer.

Trends for Spring also feature boxy square tops with maternity fit paired with skinny cargo, denim and twill pants. Tunics, leggings, and animal prints, like python and zebra, remain a must. Ella Moss (for prints) and J Brand Jeans are exclusive to A Pea in the Pod.

Lastly, A Pea in the Pod offers an ethereal selection of lingerie that is both fashion-forward and functional. Bras are decorated with rhinestones and come in classy patterns, thongs have lace details, and pretty girdles offer post pregnancy support. Top selling designers include Elle McPherson and Cake (for bras) and Hanky Panky (for panties).

Motherhood Maternity:

The Collection will be available between January – February 2011. Lower price points do not sacrifice great style at all.

• Americana focuses on red, white and blue colors, in addition to vintage inspired floral dresses. There are tons of cardigans with details such as braiding and belt pulls. Swimwear is classic and stylish – for example, gingham with lace details and nautical with navy blue and white stripes. The bathing suits are also functional offering full coverage panties with band support, and tops with fuller cups and convertible straps to help Mamas feel comfortable. You can buy the swimwear as separates along with nice solid cover-ups.

• Vintage Floral is similar to Fem Utility, but has more florals. Think a tiered top with soft muted tones, such as gray and green, paired back with a military jacket for a look that is both rugged and feminine. Pinks, corals, and lilacs complete the color palette.

• Career has wardrobe staples including men’s wear inspired pants with pinstripes, pencil skirts, and ruffled cardigans. There are also black dresses with bow details perfect for work and then an evening out, and blousey tees with sequins and fun graphics. More animal prints too.

Motherhood Maternity also carries Reebok sportswear. The sets in gray, white and coral are especially appealing. And finally there’s sleepwear. Separates are sweet with lace and bow details, while ruched gowns and matching robes are divine. Everything is pregnancy and nursing functional.

Pea in the Pod and Motherhood Maternity apparel is available at Destination Maternity™ superstores across the country. Visit http://www.destinationmaternity.com to find a location near you or shop online. You might also want to check out the latest diaper bags. High-end brands Petunia Picklebottom, Skip Hop, and Stork Sak have new colorful patterns, such as florals and chevrons. They have fashion forward styling for Mamas that don’t want to carry traditional looking diaper bags.

So expectant Mamas, bring out the best of those curves and baby bumps with these cutting-edge fashions.
