It’s easy to forget yourself when you’re a parent. As a selfless mom or dad, you give so much of yourself to your children; you often end up at the bottom of your list of priorities. But this year, in your attempt to stick to those New Year’s resolutions, take a little time for yourselves and get the relaxation, romance and adventure you deserve. And the perfect destination in which to do this is Travaasa of Austin. Surrounded by the ancient live oaks and undulating hills of the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve, this eco-friendly experiential resort truly embraces nature while giving you the peace, tranquility and feelings of good health and happiness that we hope 2013 will bring all year round.

My husband and I traveled to Austin last March, a beautiful time of year in Texas’ State Capital city. I was beyond excited to show my hubby all of my favorite hot spots from when I lived there while in graduate school at UT. But I was equally excited for our retreat to Travaasa where we were sure to reconnect with each other, ourselves and with nature.

After a beautiful car ride through the winding hills near Lake Travis at sunset, we arrived at this unique experiential resort where we were greeted by the friendly faces of the staff and guests. After settling into our tranquil, eco-chic accommodations, we took a stroll over to Jean’s Kitchen, the on-sight restaurant. Known for its delicious dishes composed of fresh, organic, and locally sourced ingredients whenever possible, Jean’s Kitchen also fosters a sense of community at the table. Guests can enjoy meals in the rustic yet rich and modern interior, drinks around the fire pit at dusk, or breakfast overlooking lush hills and valleys on the outdoor patio. And while truly delicious low fat, low calorie meals are offered (nutritional info available), there is ample opportunity to indulge in a plethora of yummy guilty pleasures!

Over the course of our 2-day stay, my husband and I achieved the perfect balance of relaxation and rejuvenation. We enjoyed a sunrise hike through the Balcones Canyonlands, learned to play a few songs on the harmonica and experienced a truly unforgettable guided equine encounter. Not a conventional horseback riding lesson (although you can do that as well), the equine encounter teaches you to project your intentions and build self-awareness and confidence by guiding one of these majestic animals.

I also couldn’t resist taking a surprisingly challenging mechanical bull-riding exercise class, and I fully intend to try the state-of-the-art challenge course on our next visit to Travaasa. Designed in partnership with Outward Bound Professional, the course begins with the Cob Web, progresses over Raider Bridge, takes you through the Flying V and over to navigate Double Trouble. The linear progression of the course culminates with a fantastic flight of over 250 feet, soaring over the treetops. What a perfect way to start the New Year off on a healthy foot!

But admittedly, my favorite part of the day was spent lounging by the serene infinity-edge pool after a luxurious facial and massage at the fabulous Spa at Travaasa Austin. The spa offers a myriad of both unique and standard treatments and the facility itself is contemporary-rustic while beautiful in décor.

If you want to get a jump-start on your New Year’s resolutions, hop a flight to the lone star state this January which is Vitality Month at the resort. All of the workshops, classes, culinary demonstrations and wellness activities are focused on renewing the mind, body and soul – and, of course, detoxing. But whatever you fancy, be it meditation, yoga, the Texas Two-Step, cultural workshops or hiking at sunrise, you can experience it all (for a very reasonable cost) in the Zen-like preserve of Travaasa Austin. After a quick nonstop flight back to New York, you’ll arrive home to your family, ready to take on the challenges of parenting and excited to appreciate the joy of life like never before.
