Metro Pets

When my good friend Ellie got married last year, I was happy to be part of her wedding, a perfect happily-ever-after fairy tale. She was marrying a good man – tall and handsome, with a great sense of humor, an ideal match for her quirky and intelligent personality. The reception was at an old Victorian house by the shore – we sipped cocktails on the verandah while the ocean breezes swirled around our bridesmaid’s dresses, a string quartet played in the background – it was all very F. Scott Fitzgerald. Earlier that day, Ellie floated down the aisle in an ivory silk designer dress, her beautiful cushion-cut diamond ring sparkling on her left hand. She was picture perfect. Little did the photographer know that every picture he took of Ellie hid her little fashion secret. Beneath the silky folds of her wedding dress, Ellie was wearing bedroom slippers! A great believer in comfort, she didn’t want her memories at the end of her special day to be of tired feet.

There have been countless times when I myself have chosen comfort and convenience in my footwear, over-riding style and good taste, notably, every early morning when I have to take my dog out. When my pooch wakes me up before the sun rises, rousing me out a dream where I win ten million dollars for knowing how many complete sonnets there are in Romeo and Juliet, the last thing I’m thinking of when I pull on my jeans is making a fashion statement. Usually, I have on my ratty bedroom slippers as I head out groggily through the front door.

Now I can marry my love of comfort, convenience and dogs all together with Amy Jo Gladstone needlepoint slippers (www.AmyJoGladstone.com). The canine footwear are perfect for lounging around the house, especially for weekends away with friends when you still want to look chic, without looking like you’re trying too hard. Or if you need to run out to get the mail from the mailbox, these cute slippers will have your neighbor’s tongues wagging. If doggy-style is not your thing, her spa collection is amazingly comfortable. My favorite is the Shag Platform Slipper which envelopes your feet in absolute comfort.

If you need to venture a little further from home, Amy Jo Gladstone has stylish and cozy footwear with two lines – Collection and Lifestyle. The Collection line of footwear with wedges, mules and monogrammed shoes boasts luxurious materials such as cashmere, shearling and suede. As for the Lifestyle line, the new Rose Leather Slipper makes a bold statement with its delicate bow. With heels one inch or less, they’re perfect for pounding the pavements of the city.

A New York native, Amy Jo Gladstone has a distinguished fashion heritage. Her mother won fashion design awards and her father was a pioneer in the apparel market. With her fine arts education and ten years in the jewelry business, she brings her eye for detail and quality, as well as her fashion savvy to all her shoe designs.

Amy Jo Gladstone slippers make great gifts, especially for Mother’s Day. I’m picking up a pair for Ellie, who just became a mom herself.
