Metro Pets

By Felissa Benjamin

As the old saying goes charity begins at home. But no one said charity has to be selfless (ok, maybe someone did but we’re choosing to ignore them). Plus, a little shopping never hurt anyone and in this case it’s for a good cause – man’s best friend. This month open up your pocketbook and pick up some cutie couture for your pup (or puss) and help out those less fortunate fidos and felines in need of some TLC.

Trixie and Peanut Mayor’s Woof Hoodie
The Henri Bendel of canine couture now has its own signature hoodie. This stylish silk-screened vintage-washed WOOF look is a “must-have” for the charity minded mutt. All of the proceeds from this trendy track jacket help to keep the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals transport vans in service. $30 in sizes X-Small to XXX-Large at www.trixieandpeanut.com.

Flowers Helping Pets
Brighten someone’s day while also saving a homeless pet’s life. It doesn’t get any better than this. Place a flower order through PetSmart Charities and 10% of your order goes to support homeless putties and puppies. PetSmart Charities has saved over 2 million lives already. Keep that number and the flowers growing. www.petsmartcharities.org/donate/flowers-helping-pets.php

ASPCA Wristbands
Wristbands have been all the rage for a while. Now keep the city’s neediest residents close to your heart…um, wrist with the ASPCA Wristband. Work with the ASPCA to fight animal cruelty and spread the word with each bright orange band. Check out the entire ASPCA store that includes magnets, mugs and even tees. And all of it for a great cause – stopping animal cruelty. www.aspca.org.

It’s easy to take our pets for granted. They watch Grey’s Anatomy with us, eat with us and sleep in our beds. But some putties and puppies aren’t as lucky. So this month think of all those furry faces that might not have a warm place to snuggle at night and link up to some four-legged friendly sites. It’s only a hop, skip and tail-wag away.
