Metro Pets

The extent of the devastation in Japan from multiple catastrophes – earthquake, tsunami and nuclear crises – has been in the forefront of relief efforts worldwide. As we have seen from Hurricane Katrina, it is not just the people in the stricken areas that need aid, but animals could use a helping hand too.

The Japan Earthquake Animal Rescue And Support Group, is a coalition of three organizations – HEART-Tokushima, Animal Garden Niigata and Japan Cat Network. They are groups that have been rescuing and re-homing animals in Japan for many years, and will use your donation directly for the support of animals affected by the earthquake and tsunami. Their intention is to provide shelter, coordinate animal rescues, and to share animal rescue related news to the public. Like their individual groups, this collaboration is staunchly no-kill.

Another organization called Animal Rescue Kansai (ARK) is also helping by having emergency facilities and a team of experienced staff able to deal with traumatized animals. The logistics of getting animals from the Tohoku/Sendai area is immense since roads and other transport links have been limited. The only means to get animals may be by helicopter, which was one method used after the Kobe earthquake.

You can even help ARK out by personally volunteering with their rescue efforts, or by donations. Use PayPal through and add “for earthquake animals”

The Humane Society International is also responding to helping animals in Japan and has already made a $50,000 grant to a coalition partner, arranged for the purchase and shipment of $120,000 in supplies, and helped to set the stage for emergency sheltering operations in the devastated areas of northeastern Japan. In the coming days, HSI will face two major challenges: taking in animals who have lost their owners, and helping people who managed to survive with their pets.
