Television’s Dog Whisperer Cesar Millan recommends giving your dogs at least two half hour walks a day, and in the city many dogs enjoy dog runs, exploring parks and trailing after their humans all across town. But sometimes it’s great for a dog and his human to hit the road for broader horizons. A day of surf and sand is great fun for most dogs, but many beaches are closed to dogs during the summer; however, off-season there are more options — see http://www.hikewithyourdog.com/WhatBeachArticle.html for dog-friendly beaches in the New York area). It’s also fun to take your dog on a hike through the woods to see the Fall leaves – check out http://www.hikewithyourdog.com/States/NewYork.html for places to take your dog hiking. Whether your destination is the beach or the woods there are some items that will ensure your road trip in the car with Rex is a success.

The Kurgo Auto Zip Line with Harness for car trips is a three piece set in a nylon and mesh pouch which includes a harness, an adjustable nylon web strap with “S” hooks that forms a zip line along the back seat or above the back seat when attached to either the back seat belts or the rear passenger overhead handles, and a tether that attaches to both the harness and the zip line. The harness can also be used with the tether in the front seat and, after leaving the car, as a halter collar and leash. Sounds complicated? Perhaps, but very practical — this is a great multi-purpose set that restrains your dog in the car but still allows him to move safely along the back seat.

Like many dogs, my little Cairn Terrier likes to look out the car window, but due to her small size, until I got the The Snoozer Luxury Lookout Car Seat, she needed to sit on someone’s lap and stand precariously on her hind legs to take in the view. The car seat is an elegant micro-suede throne for your dog replete with contrast piping and a plush cushion that boosts pup 9 inches and can be used on both front and back seats. It has a slotted back through which a seat belt fits to lock the seat into place, and a strap that attaches to both the seat belt and your own harness so that your dog will sit securely in the car seat. The seat is so attractive and comfortable that it can double as a dog bed, and conveniently, both the seat and cushion slipcovers are removable and machine washable. Now Biscuit safely watches the world pass by from her cozy perch. For more information go to http://www.snoozerpetproducts.com/snoozer-luxury-lookout-ii-pet-car-seat-p-167.html. The Solvit Deluxe Sta-Put Hammock Seat Cover protects your dogs from slipping off the backseat, protects seats from messes and scratches, and creates a barrier between the front and back seats. The hammock is machine washable, and the soft but sturdy micro-suede top fabric is quilted, padded and treated with Stain-Blok. It fits easily over front and back head rests with adjustable straps, there are two handy storage pockets as well as seat belt slits so that you can still use a harness to limit your dog’s range of motion. Any size backseat will be fully covered, and the leather trim and bar-tack sewn construction are both attractive and durable. A perfect blend of style and function!

Don’t forget to protect your dog from ticks and fleas at a minimum from April through November in the Northeast, but fleas can hatch in temperatures above 40 degrees which may occur between December and March as well. Fleas are found on the beach, not just in grass or wooded areas, and FiproGuard for Dogs kills those horrible adult fleas, flea eggs and larvae, ticks and chewing lice and controls mites for up to 30 days. The formula is easy to apply: the applicator tip is used to part the hair between the dog’s shoulder blades and the medicine is squeezed directly onto the dog’s skin. The formula is even waterproof.

While some dogs love to swim, other dogs are fearful of the water or their proportions make swimming difficult. I go by the “better safe than sorry” adage, and put a Ruffwear Portage Float Coat on my little dog any time she’s near water be it a pool, lake or ocean. The Portage Float Coat is an all around recreational canine life jacket that buckles on easily, is cut for effortless horizontal movement and has a handle to aid pulling pup out of water when swim time is over.

Even on wide open beaches or acres of woods dogs may be required to be leashed, and for your own peace of mind, you may prefer to keep your dog leashed. A flexi Comfort Long Soft Grip Handle Retractable Leash is ideal when you want your dog to have the freedom to explore without giving up the security of a leash. The soft rubber handle feels great to hold, and because the cord extends up to 26 feet my dog has room to roam, yet I can easily rein her in with the push of a button. However, be aware of park rules, some require a leash of up to 6 feet, nothing longer.

Available online at PetSmart http://www.petsmart.com and at Petopia locations:
420 E. 14th Street (212) 677-2400
404 3rd Avenue (212) 481-4544

Of course your pup needs food and water on a road trip, and you’ll still need to clean up after him. The Petrageous Designs Pet Travel Kit has a waterproof, leakproof, collapsible travel bowl good for food and/or water, a goody bag for toting treats, a poop pouch bag dispenser, and fifteen 100% biodegradable bags all in one dog duffle. Each piece is made of durable nylon, and the pouches have Velcro straps that easily attach to a leash or belt straps.

Available online at Amazon http://www.amazon.com

So, hit the road with your canine compadre and, as always, make sure your pup is wearing identification tags. Happy trails!
