My Irish Setter puppy celebrated her first birthday this past summer. To commemorate the event, I took her on a weekend trip to Fire Island. Irish Setters are known to love the water but this was Darby’s first trip to the beach and I was a little worried that she might not take to the experience. My apprehensions were unwarranted because as soon as she saw the ocean, she instantly morphed into a surf dog. For the whole weekend all she wanted to do was hang out on the sand, fetch sticks and ride the waves.

All the fine sand, salt and sea water played havoc on her fur. I would rinse her off with the hose at the end of each day but by Sunday her coat was looking a little lackluster. When I did get her home, I gave her a good shampoo and conditioning and her coat shone again. Ironically, the shampoo I used was the Ocean Mist Tearless Shampoo by Royal Treatment. Both a cleanser and a soothing balm, this tearless formula cleans without stripping the skin of natural oils — it contains seaweed, kelp, aloe and natural emollients. Like all their products, it’s also specifically created for a dog’s pH level. It’s not recommended to use human shampoo on a dog – which is formulated for the pH of 5.5, a dog’s is closer to 7.5.

Royal Treatment Natural Pet Formulas ( ) is the “pet” project of Prince Lorenzo Borghese, grandson of cosmetics creator Princess Marcella Borghese. Lorenzo created Royal Treatment two years ago for his own dog Belle after extensive research and tapped family connections to develop and obtain the finest ingredients from around the world. The result is a line of pet products of exceptional quality that is more akin to a spa skin treatment for dogs.

Any shampoo can claim that it’s all natural – the Food and Drug Administration doesn’t regulate pet cleansers unless it’s medicated. Also, pet shampoos are not required to list their ingredients on the label. However, Royal Treatment Natural Pet Formulas is sincerely faithful to their holistic philosophy. Their formulas are primarily human grade cosmetic ingredients with no harsh chemicals. Their highly popular Honey Dipped Banana and Oatmeal Tearless Shampoo contains 14 natural ingredients including Jojoba Seed Oil and Clove Oil. None of their product is the result of animal testing and all are vet approved.

Cats can also enjoy the royal treatment. Obviously most kitties hate baths and the water, but you can freshen their coats with the Cooling Cucumber Tearless Spritz or the Papaya and Aloe Wipes. These items are especially handy when you take your pet on vacation.

As for Darby’s summer vacation, she loved her trip to the beach and brought home a keepsake, — she still has her favorite driftwood in her toy box.
