At my dog’s last annual check-up, her vet announced that Biscuit needs to lose two pounds. Putting Biscuit on a diet is a challenge because she really enjoys her two meals a day and treats in between. Her veterinarian suggested reducing her meals in size and finding healthier treats. Here are some ways I’ve found to give treats without adding pounds.

The Everlasting Treat Ball from Starmark Training & Behavior Solutions was an immediate success with my dog. It holds an everlasting treat on either side (it comes with one) and additional treats can be placed inside the ball. True to its name, the treat is taking a very long time to wear down, and Biscuit has been unable to damage the ball which is made from a virtually indestructible material stronger than rubber and free of latex, vinyl, and phthalates. With this ball your dog gets the experience of having a treat but is stimulated to play with the ball and will be more focused on the challenge of getting to the treat rather than eating.

Also from Starmark the Treat Dispensing Chew Ball can be filled with Starmark or other treats and can be used instead of a regular food bowl. One great feature of the super strong material it’s made from is custom openings can be cut into the ball without compromising its integrity and it rolls, bounces and floats in water. Your dog can fetch the ball and get a lot of exercise along with some treats. Another way to treat your dog is with the Treat Dispensing Bob-A-Lot which looks like a plastic upside down light bulb. Treats can be placed through the neck at the top and fall through two chambers to the bottom of the ball where your dog can prod the Bob-A-Lot to make the treats fall out through an opening with a sliding doors that adjusts the difficulty level. Starmark’s Interactive treat toys come in multiple sizes and help prevent destructive boredom behaviors in dogs of every size.

PetSafe, the makers of Lickety Stik have come up with a healthy, portable, low calorie way to treat your dog. Lickety Stik is a natural liquid treat in a small bottle with a roller-ball top that dispenses the treat when your dog licks the ball. The beauty is there’s only 1 calorie for 10 licks and Lickety Stik comes in Savory Chicken, Braised Liver, Smokey Bacon and three new flavors: Beef Burger, Peanut Butter and Sharp Cheese.

Available online at PetSmart http://www.petsmart.com and at Petco http://www.petco.com for locations.
With these products my dog gets to enjoy the reward of a treat without packing on pounds. She’ll be back to her ideal weight in no time!
