My dear readers, do you realize we are just about the only country that does not routinely use our own bags when food shopping? It’s such a shame, isn’t it, especially when ECOBags has given us the fabulous, fashionable and functional String Market Bags. Made of certified organic cotton and available in an array of summer-bright colors as well as earth tones, the practical yet sassy ECOBag String Market Bags are ready to go from the market to the beach in Designer Granola style.

Available in two styles – tote handle, or long, over-the-shoulder handle – the String Market Bags fold up small enough to fit in your purse, but when in use can hold a surprising amount of stuff. I put them to the test a few times. At the farmers market, I fit $100 worth of meat, eggs, veggies, cheese and bread (OK… and one brownie!) into one shoulder bag and one tote with no problem. In fact, I could have fit more, but ran out of cash and had to stop shopping. (Don’t you hate it when that happens?) On another occasion, I thought I’d really give the tote bag a test and carried 20 pounds of Feline Pine cat litter home from the pet store. Not only did the bag make carrying that monstrosity easier, it also held up perfectly and didn’t get all stretched out of shape from the heavy load. By that point I was very impressed!

Since then, I’ve been carrying at least one bag with me at all times in my purse and I delight in telling checkout people, “I have my own bag!”

ECOBags String Market Bags are available through the ECOBags website at www.ecobags.com, or in Manhattan at Commodities, 165 First Avenue; Integral Yoga, 229 West 13th Street; Union Square Market, 14th Street; Columbus Natural Foods, 725 Columbus Avenue; and in Brooklyn at the Park Slope Food Coop, 782 Union Street; Back to the Land, 142 7th Avenue. You can also find ECOBags canvas bags at the Union Square Market, and make sure to check out the ECOBag website for their “ECO Shopping Systems” and other amazing organic bags. (I LOVE the French Market bags!)

ECOBags Model, Emma Bell, (see photo above) is a New York City-based actress, who has been seen on the WB show, “Bedford Diaries”, as well as guest starring roles in “Law & Order: SVU” and “Third Watch.”
