This year, my New Year’s resolution was to find a good holistic doctor for annual checkups, so I could avoid arguing with my very nice, but very “conventional” primary care physician over things like birth control pills and x-rays. For everyone else that prefers a holistic approach to health, there is a wonderful holistic health center right on Fifth Avenue and 28th Street!
Established in 2000, The Continuum Center for Health and Healing is a branch of Beth Israel Medical Center. The Center offers such services as internal medicine, acupuncture, psychotherapy and fertility solutions along with workshops in women’s health and mental wellness, all from a holistic perspective. The Center also won an architectural design award from the Boston Society of Architects for their use of environmentally friendly materials and feng shui design to eliminate the feeling of “institution” that most medical centers are guilty of. Not only was the waiting room designed for maximum comfort and relaxation, but the hallways leading to the waiting room also evoke feelings of being “enveloped” in comfort. All construction materials including flooring, walls, paint and cabinets are non-toxic, and they also use only natural cleaning products throughout the Center. Everything about this place is designed to promote healing!
Now, the big question that is surely on everyone’s mind (at least it was on mine) — do they accept medical insurance? It depends on the doctor. Each practitioner operates independently, so contact their office directly to see if they accept your particular insurance provider.
The Continuum Center for Health and Healing is located at 245 Fifth Avenue, between 27th & 28th Streets. You can email them at firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions, and look through their website at www.healthandhealingny.org/highlights.asp for more information and phone numbers to reach each different department.
