Natural Living

Protecting your skin in the sun isn’t a choice it’s an imperative. About 1 million new skin cancers are diagnosed each year in the US, and about half of all new cancers are skin cancers, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. If that isn’t enough to scare you, think vanity. The sun causes wrinkles, sunspots, and that leathery skin that’ll go great with your Prada bag and make you look at least 7 years older than you already are! You do the math…

JASON’s chasin’ those rays

For those of you with skin like me, that fair, freckly complexion, you know by now just how harmful the sun is. You must protect your skin. Or stay in the shade. But if you must be a beach bum, make sure you don’t lie out from 12pm – 2pm when the sun’s most harmful rays are out.

And if you want an SPF that protects your skin from the sun and anti-aging rays, try JASON Family Block SPF 36. I love this stuff! It’s 70% certified organic sun protection and gives you the full spectrum of protection with all-natural ingredients like soothing aloe vera, green tea extract, evening primrose and jojoba oils. So you’ll nourish your skin with anti-aging ingredients and antioxidants. It’s pretty thick so make sure you rub it in well. And it comes with a cool key chain so you can clip it on to your beach bag. At $10.00 a tube (per 4 fl. oz.), this is one SPF that won’t leave you burned.

Keel over Kiehl’s

Here’s another must for the beach. Kiehl’s new sun care line…VVital Sun Protection.

Made with vitamin E, soybean oil and skin conditioning ingredients, it’s lightweight non-greasy and best of all won’t block your pores. And you can get it in a spray bottle so you can easily reapply for those hard-to-reach bits like your toes, the area under your arms, your ears, etc. Kiehl’s, the grand daddy of all natural beauty, is one of my favorite stores in New York. Not just because it’s right in my neighborhood, but you walk in there and nice people in white coats will help you find the right products without being pushy or intimidating. Hell they even offer you samples so you can try them out before you buy a thing. And the products are just fantastic. Just tell Georgia I sent you! Go to for more natural sun products.

Your Sun Prescription? Prescriptives

OK. There’s more. For those of you who just want a moisturizer with an SPF of about 15 for everyday, try All You Need + Broad Spectrum Moisture SPF 15 by Prescriptives. This light formula not only protects but also hydrates and refines your skin for a smoother, more radiant look. Made with natural plant extracts including grape, mulberry root, lady’s thistle, algae extracts and jojoba oils, I loved the way it moisturizes your skin, especially those with dry skin and makes your skin tone more even. At $40 a jar, this is just what the skin doctor ordered!

Fake it with Orlane

Finally for those of you who feel like cheating, why not try Orlane’s B21 Soleil Vitamines Anti-Wrinkle Self Tanner for the face. This one really works without giving you that orangey, streaky look. Armed with SPF 15, Orlane’s formula is rich in vitamin A, C, E, and B5 as well as seaweed extracts. Just use a dot on your cheeks, forehead and nose and then apply your regular moisturizer over it so you’ll really cover everywhere evenly. Voila! You’ll glow with an all-natural looking tan while others are burned. You can find Orlane products in most department stores. Or go to for more info.

Remember, any “tan” you get is from burning your skin. So if you really want to sweat in 90 degrees, take a bikram yoga class, You’ll definitely have a different color when you stagger out and best of all, it does wonders for the skin.

Next month I’ll continue my coverage on natural SPF’s. Plus, I’ll show you how to make your very own!
