Natural Living

By Irene Fogarty

Told you so. Didn’t you know that it would just go straight into hot, humid, horrid weather without a chance to say “but wait I still haven’t bought any summer clothes or spfs!” That’s where BN comes to the rescue, And this time I have a few alternative suggestions to help you take the sun as well as protecting your skin from it.

First off, how about a guilt-free tan. Or better yet, a tan product that’s actually good for your skin. Cut to Solaire Natural Carotene & Borage Oil Capsules – an All Natural Tan Activator. Start taking them a month in advance and your skin is ready for the rays. Or use it alone or with sensible amounts of indoor or outdoor UV exposure. You’ll tan really fast. And the beauty of it? Once you’re bronzed, Solaire will help you maintain that way all year round. What I like about these capsules are the ingredients. Grape seed and wheat germ oils that protect skin from harmful oxidation and give you a healthy glow. And borage oil which hydrates skin and regenerates skin cells. Plus, Solaire contains NO artificial color and NO preservatives. Best of all no synthetic carotene that’s responsible for that fake orangey color. So where can you get this? EuroPharma. A new company that makes preservative-free products. EuroPharma is committed to good health, healthy living and effective natural formulas that really do wonders for the skin.

Just go to http://www.EuroPharmaUSA.com or call 1-866-468-8637 and ask for Kathy. She’ll fill you in an on EP’s product integrity to create the safest, most desirable formulas possible. This is a company to keep an eye out for. They’re on to something big!

Now here’s one I hadn’t heard of until my Polish facialist suggested I use their products. They’re called DDF (Doctor’s Dermatologic Formula). DDF is a therapeutic line of skincare formulated to work synergistically with the body to assist in the process of nourishing cells to re-establish the skin’s natural balance and increase cellular metabolism. So what the hell does that mean? Basically, it promotes younger, healthier skin. Howard Sobel the founder and Elaine Linker (a guest writer on BeautyNewsNYC) know what they’re talking about. These guys are experts with degrees in everything from dermatology to nutrition to herbology. Not to mention years of practice. And it shows. I’ve tried DDF’s Organic Sunblock SPF 30. It’s perfect for those fair-skinned, sensitive types, like myself. UVA/UVB protection and it’s really light and non-greasy. So you won’t block your pores.

If you want something a little lighter for everyday, try DDF Daily Protective Moisturizer SPF 15. This fragrance-free formula will moisturize while it protects your skin. And there’s more. They even have DDF Sport Proof Sunscreen, that’s water resistant, and won’t melt into your eyes. Perfect for those water babies among us!

For more info, go to http://www.ddfskincare.com and check out their entire line of sun products. They do everything from suncare to rosacea. (Suffer from broken capillaries? There’s nothing like DDF’s Vitamin K Cream. Amazing!)

Or call them at 1800-443-2357 and ask for Jordan.

Finally, I did promise you a recipe to make your own “all-natural” spf. It’s pretty basic and only takes about 30 minutes to make. But it’s worth it and at least you can be 100% sure that all products are 100% natural. You can get all of these at any natural/organic food store. Give it a try.

What you need:
2½ ounces sesame oil
1½ ounces of coconut oil or cocoa butter
½ ounce beeswax
4 ounces of water or strong green tea
(made with distilled water if possible)
2 tablespoons of zinc oxide
Natural preservatives (1 tablespoon wheat germ oil, 1 teaspoon vitamin C powder equaling 1 gram, and 200 i.u. vitamin A)
10 – 20 drops antiseptic essential oil (optional)

What to do:
Melt the oils and beeswax in a double boiler over medium heat. Remove from the heat, add the water and mix with an electric handheld mixer until thick and creamy. Add the zinc oxide and preservatives, followed by the essential oil. Blend.

Time to make: 30 minutes
Shelf Life: 6 months with water, about 2 weeks with green tea
Storage Suggestion: Glass jar with screw top

Sesame oil is a natural sunscreen and zinc oxide protects against with UVA and UVB radiation. Apply this formula every hour or so, and make sure to reapply after swimming. For a less rich cream, add less beeswax.

Let me know the results. And have a great summer. Just be safe. It’s not worth burning that beautiful skin of yours. ‘Cause remember, you only have one!
