Skin Care

By Candice Sabatini

P53. Got that? Good, because you might be hearing some talk about that in terms of anti-aging skincare products. As any expert will tell you, the real key to keeping skin beautiful is prevention…..from damaging our DNA from oxidants such as UVA/UVB rays, smoking and environmental pollutants.

Avoiding damage from the sun isn’t only about SPF. It’s a great start, but there’s a whole lot more to it and it’s complex. P53 is a molecule referred to as the “guardian of the genome” (gene). We need its levels to be balanced in order to keep our DNA protected which in turn keeps our skin healthy and looking youthful, and most importantly helps prevent skin cancer.

Zelens Skin Science is a new scientific approach to skin care that’s focused on the protection of our DNA. It’s been developed and formulated by Dr. Marko Lens, a world leading authority on skin cancer as well as an internationally acclaimed reconstructive surgeon. Dr. Lens has formulated a line of creams which counteract oxidative injury to the skin caused by environmental factors and protect our DNA by regulating the balance of the P53 molecule.

Zelens DNA Protection Day Cream – Extra Rich

I met with Dr. Lens while he was visiting New York a couple of weeks ago. A charming, native Italian from Milan, Dr. Lens now resides in the UK and spends most of his days treating skin cancer patients. Zelens Skin Science, his new skinceutical line, consists of a very simple regime – a day cream, a night cream and an eye cream. The Day Cream (regular or super rich) protects our skin from the harmful environment with 20 natural ingredients & anti-oxidants, including kampo, a Japanese herb, along with broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection. The Night Cream (also regular or super rich) is focused on repair by stimulating cellular reconstruction and natural collagen and providing moisture and nourishment. The eye cream reduces puffiness, tightens the skin and also fights environmental damage caused by free radicals.

The fresh scent of the cream comes from shiso extract, a Japanese mint leaf with antioxidants and anti inflammatory properties. The packaging designed by Anouska Hempel (yes, the Anouska) is a sophisticated combination of sleek Italian style mixed with Japanese artistic sensibility. The green and black glass jars are each housed in its own black and green box which is designed like a drawer with a black grosgrain ribbon pull that I know I’ll use to house trinkets once my supply of cream is finished…..which I hope doesn’t happen too soon!

Zelens Skin Science is brand new to the US (and we’re the first to let the cat out of the bag) and is available only at SpaceNK, 99 Greene Street. Prices for the face creams range from $200 – $250 and the eye cream is $160. Visit for more information or to purchase.
