The clock isn’t the only thing you need to change during the crisp, festive fall months. Your skin care regimen should be one of the first things you update to accommodate for drier, colder air and the harsh environmental and elemental conditions. We’ve compiled this handy guide to help you adapt your routine.
Switch to thicker formulations.
Thinner, summer-appropriate lotions can go bye-bye in favor of thicker, richer formulations for all your precious parts as a general rule of thumb. Pay most attention to those regions that are constantly exposed, such as your face, neck and hands. Avene Hydrance Optimale Rich Hydrating Cream will replenish depleted moisture in your face and neck by preventing water from evaporating on your skin, instead sealing it in. The result is smooth, protected and touchable skin. Also, just because the sun isn’t as blazing and the hours of sunlight are shorter doesn’t mean you can forego SPF. Continue to seek products with SPF since we’re always vulnerable to the effects of the sun. If you prefer your moisturizer and SPF in one, try the new Clinique SPF25 Age Defense Moisturizer, which has antioxidants and a high SPF factor in one rich cream.
Stave off dry skin by moisturizing twice a day.
You don’t need to be diagnosed with a dermatological condition in order to use high-grade moisturizers that treat them. Preventative methods are encouraged. Theraplex has created “medical moisturizers” expressly to do battle with dreaded dryness. Theraplex Emollient for Severely Dry Skin is designed for those with chronic conditions like eczema yet it’s completely non-greasy and recommended for saturating your hands and cuticles. If you want to prevent dry skin, this tube is your Holy Grail, as well. Theraplex Hydro Lotion is fragrance-free and has a “water-in-oil” emulsion, while providing a barrier between your skin and the often brutal climate you toil through. It’s lightweight but it’s effective.
Try “soap free” cleansers
Soap can dry out your skin no matter what the weather is like. Avene Gentle Cleanser For Intolerant Skin cleanses and dissolves make up without leaving a film or irritating the skin. No matter what your type, this cleanser babies your skin.
If you prefer to keep the memory of summer near and dear to your olfactory senses, cleanse with SukiPure Sensitive Cleansing Bar. Don’t let the citrus aroma fool you into thinking it’s not moisturizing, it’s got plenty of shea butter that moisturizes and keeps the flakes away! Gentle enough to use on both face and body.
Don’t skimp on exfoliation!
Sure, the temptation to not exfoliate is there, given the rough, grainy textures of most exfoliants and the harsh effect they can have on those of you with blemish-prone skin. But with colder weather comes flakier skin and dead skin cells need to be sloughed off in order to reveal your most beautiful, glowing you! AB 10% Treatment Pads uses glycolic acid, whose small size allows for quickest and easiest penetration of the skin to remove the dead skin cells which intensify the look of fine lines and uneven skin tone. The product is alcohol-free, which prevents even more dryness! Dead skin cells, beware!
Try new things!
Don’t immediately revert to old habits and lug out products from last season, which may have lost some of their mojo from being stored through the steamy summer months. Toss them in favor of being adventurous! Experiment with new brands and products, since it’s thrilling to discover new treats for your skin. We recommend Pevonia Botanica’s De-Aging Body Balm and Salt Mousse. The spa-line’s fragrant, tropical scent and organic phyto extracts lend to luscious skin, restoring and revitalizing for a more youthful appearance.
Splurge on at least one item this season.
Your skin is not only the largest organ of your body. It’s also the one people see first. So treat it with utmost care and respect. It’s okay to splurge on one pricey, ultra-luxe product. For Fall 2008, we’re cheerleading for LaMer Hydrating Infusion. It’s an investment – and LaMer is the “it” brand of the A-list skincare set — but you and your face are worth it. Apply delicately to face and neck before your moisturizer, for an extra, supremely creamy layer of conditioning. You deserve it.
