ROCK ‘N ROLL REGIMEN:
How to look your best under bright lights, with minimal sleep, and in front of the crowd
By Amy Sciaretto
Writer Hunter S. Thompson said, “The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There’s also a negative side.” While Thompson may have been exaggerating and focusing on the bad and the ugly, we are apt to agree that the music business lifestyle can wreak havoc on your skin, whether you’re a performer, a publicist, or a promoter, and regardless of your age.
The business demands a lot from your body. There’s late night parties and events, early morning meetings, lots of transoceanic travel, and hours upon hours under hot lights with layers of make up. The lifestyle puts your skin through the ringer and can -gasp!!- make you look much older.
In order to live the lifestyle and maintain skin that looks as fresh and smooth as it did when you were 21, Beauty News decided to come up with a regimen to target the specific needs of women who rock ‘n roll all night and party every day!
The Leather Pants Dilemma!
When you’re a rock chick, be it performer or industry insider, you need to be able to wrestle in and out of those skintight leather pants, so smooth, creamy skin is an absolute must. The 1-2 punch of Gabriel Couzian’s Washing Oil and Highly Nourishing Body Cream will assist with such a task. With its crisp, clean scent and light texture that melts into your epidermis, the cleanser and cream combo will keep your skin softer than a baby’s rump.
Glow, Baby, Glow!
Your skin has to be more than soft; it needs to glow like a Goddess’s during photo shoots for all those magazine covers you’re going to appear on. Drizzle a few drops of Nuxe Oil Gold Shimmer on your arms and legs, and your sexy skin will shimmer like molten gold.
Available at Henri Bendel, NYC and Beauty Collection, LA and www.nuxe.com
Avoid Acne At All Costs!
Heavy make up, sweating, hot stage lights, late nights. Ugh! That’s a recipe for acne disasters. Combat breakouts with Kinerase’s Clear Skin Regulating Mask and Moisture Light lotion; they’re an acne combating duo that’ll minimize pesky breakouts and absorb excess sebum in the skin. The line is a favorite of Miley Cyrus, AKA Hannah Montana. She may not be as cool as Joan Jett or rock as hard as Miss Pat Benetar, but she deals with the same set of skin circumstances as any rock chick, so we’ll accept her endorsement.

Party In The Wee Hours…Just Use An Eye Cream

LaRoche Posay Hydraphase is a gentle eye cream that soothes and smoothes delicate eye area skin and combats puffiness and under-eye bags that are left over from last night’s after party. It achieves the same effect as sliced cucumbers!

Keep your skin quenched and hydrated in cold, dry climates – since rock divas have fans in Russia and other chilly locales-with Nuxe Tonific moisturizer. This rich cream -formulated from Amazonian plants- keeps dry skin at bay. Or when rocking those summer festivals – playing outdoor venues in scorching heat and humidity- opt for a lighter formulation, such as Amino Genesis Cocoon Total Body Rejuvenating Emollient. The Once Over!
Joey New York Instant Chemistry The Quick Once Over fits the bill when you have to pack light and have a small bunk on a cramped tour bus and there’s no room for a train case full of toiletries that aren’t essential. This crisp astringent will get your face fresh and clean in an instant. It’ll remove all excess traces of make-up, sweat, and dirt so you can remove day make-up and reapply a fresh coat of cosmetics for an entirely different night look. It’s a multi-tasking cleanser for rockers on the go!

A Skincare Expert Weighs In
No regimen, rock ‘n roll or otherwise, would be complete without some expert tips. Marlene Katz, founder of ISS Intelligent Skin Care, weighed in with some suggestions. Katz said, “A few good things to keep in mind, whether you are a performer or behind the scenes, is to nourish the body from the inside out. Keep cells hydrated by drinking lots of purified water or reverse osmosis water. Eat fresh fruit, which provides the skin with water and anti-oxidants. Skin needs to restore and replenish, and sleep is the cure but this is often challenging. If the body is tired, the hormone cortisol kicks in. This can cause some hormonal imbalances in the skin: sporadic breakouts occur or the skin becomes either excessively dry or oily and basically out of balance. To give the skin some instant relief, sleep is a necessity. Melatonin is a good supplement to take as it not only helps you to sleep better, but also helps the body adjust to new time zones. Drink a cup of chamomile tea at night and green tea in the morning. Another way to recharge the skin is by exercise. This enhances the blood circulation and helps release toxins from the body. A good cold morning splash of water on the skin works, too. Another great trick is taking a spoon and put it in the freezer or fridge for a few minutes. Then apply an eye cream around the eyes and use the cool spoon on top to massage away puffiness. And remember the skin loves water. After any skin treatment, have a glass.” Rock on!
