Skin Care

By Betsy Aaron

Seriously, of all the things you need to do each day, is applying serum to your face one of them? By now you know me well enough to know that this question is rhetorical.

Serums penetrate beneath the surface of your skin to deliver deep, long-lasting nourishment. Moisturizers are great at protecting your face from environmental assault and to supply topical hydration– but the benefits don’t last. The molecules of moisturizers are large and act as a barrier. They temporarily hydrate and keep pollutants out but they vanish with time and cleanser. For long- term results, add a serum to your regimen and apply before you moisturize. It’s like taking vitamins or flossing, not complicated but necessary for care that’s more than superficial.

My preference is products that use natural ingredients and since serums penetrate beneath the surface of your skin into your innermost being, doesn’t natural seem like the safest way to nurture?

The Facial Serum from Indie Lee is elegant, effective and as Indie herself promised, simply amazing. Perhaps it should be re-named Truth-in-Advertising-Serum. After using night and day, I was astonished to see how significantly soothed and smoothed my face became. Ingredients include seaweed extract and fruit cell stem cells.

Rejuvenating Serum from Tata Harper smells delightfully floral, feels refreshing and firming and is readily absorbed. It is packed with natural ingredients like extracts of menyanthes flower, narcissus bulb, date, alfalfa and meadowsweet as well as essential oils of jasmine, chamomile and immortelle. You will glow.

Essence Restorative Night Treatment from Vapour Organic Beauty strengthens and restores dry, dehydrated and sensitive skin. In science-speak it helps reverse free radical damage while assisting cell renewal. I say you will awake looking radiant. Ingredients include oils of camellia seed, evening primrose and pomegranate seed, sea buckthorn, horsetail and sweet myrtle.

Neroli Age Corrective Eye Serum from ´Eminence puts a natural retinol alternative and green apple stem cells to work on lines and crow’s feet. The serum is refreshing, hydrating, and best of all, literally uplifting. The delicate skin around your eyes improves at a cellular level and collagen increases in less than a week. Why wouldn’t you apply daily??

East meets west with Lily Herbceuticals’ Goji Berry Complex Firming Serum and Bamboo Leaf Eye Serum. The serums are based on principles of Chinese herbal medicine, which have a track record of 5,000 years, and are made in America using a delivery system that helps the fruit and root extracts penetrate faster and deeper. I can attest that, though my youth has not been restored, my appearance will now deceive.
