Is it me? Or do celebrities look better now than they did 20 years ago? Think of Julia Roberts circa 1988 in “Mystic Pizza” or Courtney Cox circa 1987 in “Family Ties”. Were they merely committing fashion faux pas typical of the cheesy 80’s or could it have been something else? Well, it finally hit me. The shape of their eyebrows changed over the years – and definitely for the better! Fortunately for us, we can enlist the help of makeup artist and eyebrow specialist Maribeth Madron to help us with a similar transformation to celebrity-caliber beauty.

Maribeth, in my opinion, could be considered a ‘doctor of eyebrows’. With over 17 years in the industry, Maribeth has a ton of experience knowing how to maximize someone’s looks. With just a tweezer, an eyebrow brush and (if necessary) a scissor, Maribeth can take what seem to be 3 eyebrow hairs, multiply them by a million, and shape them to perfection.

A firm believer in working hair by hair to achieve the best shape possible for your specific face-shape, Maribeth advises against threading or waxing where the technician has little control and can take off a lot more hair than intended. Clients rush to Maribeth to rescue them when they’ve had a major eyebrow mishap. Since it is preferable to grow out your eyebrows as much as possible before your appointment, Maribeth recommends the plant extracts in Eyebrow Lipocils by Talika, which stimulate hair growth (it’s also helpful on eyelashes and you can buy it with an eyelash applicator as well).

But Maribeth could do wonders under even the worst of circumstances. She uses vegetable dye to match your dyed hair color with your eyebrows and also suggests using an eyebrow pencil to fill in gaps. However, she advises clients to use the pencil lightly in the center of the brow (as opposed to the thickest edge where we tend to head first with the pencil). During your appointment, Maribeth proceeds to work carefully and meticulously to shape your eyebrows to look full, natural and flattering to your face.

With a very loyal following of hundreds and hundreds of clients traveling to see her from all over the world, Maribeth works out of her own apartment (east of Union Square) and occasionally out of one of midtown Manhattan’s high-end spas. Her list of celebrity clientele is extensive and she’s frequently listed in Allure’s Best of Beauty Issue for makeup and brows in New York City. And all for good reason. Maribeth is one of the warmest, sweetest, yet coolest go-to beauty experts I’ve ever met. Getting your eyebrows done isn’t known for being the most relaxing of spa treatments. But with Maribeth and her fantastic personality, you’ll be glad she takes her time.
