In less time than it takes me to get from the Upper East Side to Soho, I arrived (via car) at the Fountain Spa located in Hackensack, New Jersey’s Shops at Riverside. With another prime location in Ramsey (North Jersey), the Fountain Spa offers a suburban spa experience that will have the most exclusive Manhattan spas feeling a tad insecure.
At first glance, the Fountain Spa looks like any given mall’s storefront spa and salon, complete with make-up counter and spa gift shop carrying only the finest products. But a few steps down the corridor, and I felt like I was a million miles away from the Pottery Barn that’s just a few doors down. After a gracious spa attendant set me up with soft robes, slippers and my own personal locker, I found myself in the Tranquility Room. Apropos to its name, this spacious lounge area features an impressive water feature that undoubtedly reduced my blood pressure. As I listened to the calm trickling of the waterfall and looked out the window towards blue sky and greenery, I couldn’t help but think, ‘I am definitely not in Manhattan anymore’. I recommend leaving yourself a little time to enjoy the calm atmosphere and some tasty mini muffins and fruit before your spa therapist whisks you away for your treatment.
The Fountain offers an array of specialized spa treatments including massages, facials, body treatments and wraps and salon services like waxing, mani/pedis and make-up applications. You can opt for a basic spa treatment but the Fountain is known for its unique variations on the average and expected. The Hydramemory Facial is perfect after a sun-filled summer scorcher and the Alpha-Therapy Collagen Facial will leave you looking and feeling years younger. I opted for the pre-natal facial and was amazed by how relaxed I felt during and afterwards. The paraffin hand and foot treatment and cooling facial globes added just the right touches to this not-at-all-average facial. I also enjoyed a lovely pre-natal massage that had me feeling like melted butter. I am looking forward to returning to the spa to indulge in some Reiki, Raindrop Therapy and the Dead Sea Mud Flotation Wrap. Be sure to visit the website for complete details on all the various spa treatments.
Following my massage and facial, I enjoyed a deliciously healthy spa lunch with my aunt who lives nearby. Though there is no shortage of dining options at the Shops at Riverside – Houstons, Cheesecake Factory, Rosa Mexicana, P.F. Chang’s and Morton’s Steakhouse to name a few – it was wonderful chatting quietly in the tranquility room over lunch in my robe and slippers, and prolonging the lingering serenity for a few minutes more.
With everything all under one roof, I was able to escape the heat and busy streets of Manhattan and spend the afternoon shopping at some of my favorite stores including Burberry, Saks, Bloomingdales, Louis Vuitton, Barneys CO-OP, Tiffany & Co., Pottery Barn (& PB Kids) and Williams-Sonoma. I think I just might have to plan a Girls Getaway, a Couples Escape or enjoy one of many spa packages that the Fountain arranges. And I’ll definitely plan a visit the next time I have a wedding in the area. I had always thought my suburban friends were jealous of my New York City lifestyle. The Fountain Spa makes me understand why this isn’t necessarily the case.
