I love themes – for a birthday party, Bar-Mitzvah, holiday party – you name it. That’s why I felt compelled to include the Pumpkin Resurfacer Facial in the November, a.k.a. Thanksgiving issue of Granted, the spa treatment room was not filled with the sweet aroma of pumpkins during my treatment, and thankfully for the sake of my diet, it did not entice me to wolf down an entire pumpkin pie the second I left Sunpoint Retreat Spa. But I did leave the spa with glowing, baby soft skin for which I could truly be ‘thankful’.

The Pumpkin Resurfacer Facial is not a conventional facial, complete with relaxing head and neck massage that leaves you feeling like jello but rather, it is a mild chemical peel – a ‘starter peel’, if you will, for those chemical peel virgins out there. I was definitely nervous about having my first peel, and visions of Samantha Jones at Carrie’s book party loomed in my head as I entered the treatment room. But Sunpoint is not about to let you look silly. After all, their specialty is safe, natural-looking faux sun tanning. The manager of Sunpoint brilliantly decided to expand the offerings of the tanning salon to include spa treatments since according to her, “New Yorkers don’t want to admit to going tanning. You need to give them another excuse for being there.” I think she’s onto us.

The spa treatment rooms, which are now repurposed spray tan rooms, are clean and professional and the relaxing music was inviting to say the least. Once my skin was cleaned and prepped, the application of each DermaQuest skincare product was professionally applied. All in all, the application of each product, including drying time of the Resurfacer (which feels cold, can totally clear up your sinuses and creates an ever so slight tingling sensation), took less than 45 minutes.

I definitely saw and felt the results of this treatment immediately and any redness was clear by the time I got home 15 minutes later. This gentle treatment is excellent for change of season prep, improving hydration, evening out skin tone and treating hyper pigmentation (which I still had as a result of my pregnancy). It’s also great for fine lines/wrinkles as it stimulates collagen production. Basically, you shouldn’t expect to come out feeling like you’ve had the best night’s sleep of your life after this treatment, but you’ll definitely look like you did….and without those annoying extractions.

Sunpoint Retreat Spa offers an array of merchandise and spa treatments for pretty reasonable prices and packages (including the hard-to-find Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Massage that uses a unique foot technique). This neighborhood spa isn’t an overly designed, luxurious place to lounge around in with friends necessarily, but it is a charming locale that will make you instantly feel sunny, bright and happy, even as the cold weather starts to take over Manhattan this winter. And if you want to go tanning while you’re there too, don’t worry, we won’t tell anyone!
