Need a pet-friendly hotel in San Diego, CA? Here’s my choice.

Many people visit Southern California for its year-round temperate climate and nature, endless sunshine, powerful surf and landscaped streets.

If you need a winter break The Palomar – a Kimpton Hotel – accommodates on many levels: the convenient downtown location (next to House of Blues), sleek décor, and you can bring your dog(s) or cat(s), regardless of their size.

If you’re an animal lover and frequent traveler, this place might have you spending more time in the lobby petting the animals and socializing with like-minded folks than surfing the sea-foam. Regardless, it’s your choice. Here’s what I discovered.

A very large pivotal block of brass, and work of art, swings open by a doorman bidding you welcome to the hotel. The interior is warmly lit with brown and tan table lamps and an attractive chandelier that resembles a collection of mushrooms or umbrellas (rain in SoCal?). There are several plush sofas and chairs accented with colorful pillows and surfboards flank the lobby to remind us that this is a “hang ten” city.

Our room, while very small even by New York City standards, was comfortable with mahogany-tone wood flooring and matching wall veneers. All of the lamps have a dimmer switch so you can adjust the ambiance. There was a small closet with two guest bathrobes: zebra and panther prints. The bath is contemporary with a partial glass enclosed shower and rainfall showerhead. Cheeky.

You can workout in the small gym on the second floor and then show off your fitness at the swimming pool and sprawling outdoor lounge on the fourth floor. It’s quite a scene on the weekends. If you didn’t bring the perfect outfit, a short walk or cab ride away is plenty of shopping including Neiman Marcus, Saks and countless boutiques.

After your day of sightseeing, shopping and/or jogging on the waterfront, relax in the serenity of the hotel’s Se Spa. They offer treatments for both men and women and you can book a dual hot stone or deep massage together. Check out all that they offer here: http://www.hotelpalomar-sespa.com.

The Saltbox Bar & Restaurant is on the ground floor — a casual and handsome atmosphere meets Asian/Mexican inspired cuisine. I tried one of their signature cocktails: Blacker the Berry, The Sweeter the Goose, which is comprised of Grey Goose, Blackberry, Hibiscus, Lime and Rhubarb bitters. Sweet! I also recommend the appetizer portion of Shishito Peppers with smoked paprika aioli. Not much more to report here.

What really made our stay at the Palomar most enjoyable were the employees; they are kind, gracious and extremely accommodating. We had several special requests and a doggy emergency. The staff came to our aid immediately and professionally for all circumstances.

This is the place to book when visiting sun-drenched San Diego, specifically if you want to travel with your pets or simply enjoy the company of our four-legged friends.
