This month, the featured location for destination waterfront weddings is in Westbrook, CT. Built in the 1950s, this resort was home to entertainers like Barbra Streisand and Woody Allen before the Catskills became popular. With twenty-six acres of land and the only private beachfront resort in the state, Water’s Edge Resort & Spa offers several unique options for the bride, groom and wedding guests. Before you head for the Cape, let’s take a look at a gorgeous place closer to NYC.
Just two hours away via Amtrak (it’s shorter by car service) this is a sprawling resort with meticulously manicured lawns and gardens that overlook the Long Island Sound. Most people don’t even think of Connecticut for beaches so perhaps it is their best kept secret. The amenities are very good and there are three ballrooms to choose from; the size of your guest list dictates several options. Each package is perfectly tailored to the vision and wishes of the couple — from Indian and Maharani celebrations to traditional and unconventional weddings.
This will take place on the lower lawn surrounded by seasonal landscaping and facing the shoreline. While the space cannot be tented, the grounds are breathtaking with open skies, fresh air, manicured gardens and brand new congregational chairs.
In the event that the weather is not favorable for an outdoor wedding, the bride and groom can decide on the very day if they want to move the ceremony to the beautiful interior of the resort. The cocktail hour will be held on the Royal Terrace just a few steps away from the lower lawn. The elevated area offers guests a stunning view of the water, jetty and gardens while providing guests with interior and exterior access.
The resort is opened year round to accommodate weddings in any season. If the size of the guest list is around 300 the reception will be held in the largest ballroom with no windows. The theme and/or decorative vision will be complete with the help of the wedding coordinator and outside vendors. The second ballroom (above) comes with a working fireplace.
All wedding packages include:
• Overnight accommodations for the bride and groom.
• Couples massage.
• A personal wedding team.
• Customization — your occasion can be tailored to your needs and desires.
• Michele’s Bridal Boutique is onsite and could provide attire and alterations for the wedding party, bride and mother of the bride.
• Complimentary anniversary dinner
In my opinion, the most impressive options regarding this location are the Villas By The Sea. Separate from the original hotel, these accommodations are remarkable and the closest to the water. Luxurious. The villas come fully equipped: Viking stove and refrigerator, a flat screen TV in every room including the bath, a modern fireplace, contemporary fixtures, ultra chic bathtub with a Jacuzzi and separate shower. The views from the large veranda are stunning and accessible thru the living room and the master bedroom.
This could be the perfect opportunity for the bride and groom to host a private cocktail/dinner party with plenty of space to entertain during the weekend. I recommend that you visit them and be prepared to reserve the villas early.
The cuisine will be catered by resort’s executive chef and team. There is also a pastry chef on premise for the preparation and display of the most creative wedding cakes. The traditional wedding package menu includes meat, seafood and vegetarian hors d’oeuvres. There are also several choices of salad. Entrees range from several chicken dishes, seafood, pork, beef and vegetarian options.
The Restaurant at Water’s Edge (above) offers award-winning cuisine in an elegant dinning room with wonderful views. The local community voted it the Best Brunch in Connecticut!
