Beauty Insider: Career Queen Routine

The beauty industry can be a bit pre-occupied with targeting the younger generation. I have yet to hear about the “Superwoman” range or line. So, what about the rest of us? The sad fact is that many women over the age of 40 still don’t know how to apply makeup.

As a freelance makeup artist, beauty educator, licensed real estate agent, writer, and not to mention a wife with a household to run, I can tell you that what I need is makeup that lasts all day, is effortless to use, is perfect in shade and texture, and basically something that will never let me down. It’s a lot to ask, but the beauty industry is up for the task.

Below are my guidelines on beauty for the professional woman and some of the best products, based on my experience, to help you take on the world, one move at a time.

Skin/Foundation: If you need help selecting the right color, make sure you’re in natural light aka the sun or go to a beauty professional at Sephora or a department store.

Nars All Day Luminous Weightless Foundation: Nars nails it with this All Day Luminous Weightless Foundation. It is a true formulation masterpiece. With a very convenient pump, the sheer fluid stays fresh and just a little goes a long way, as Amy noted in a previous edition of Best Bets. The coverage offers a modern, flawless and radiant look of medium-to-full coverage and works best with normal to combination skin and oily or acne prone. Adding a bit of your favorite lotion can turn it into a tinted moisturizer as well. With 20 shades that are oil-and-fragrance-free, this is one of those products you should easily update your makeup kit with.

Urban Decay Naked Skin Ultra Definition Powder Foundation: A powder foundation is always great to have on hand, and Urban Decay’s Naked Skin Ultra Definition Powder Foundation is definitely my new favorite. The sponge it comes with is perfect for application, but you have the option to do so with a powder brush for a really light and quick dusting. It can set foundation beautifully, but it also does the job alone for when you seriously need a quick and effective touch up while on lunch or after work. The little purple pouch that carries the powder is also adorable.

Eyes: This the feature that people focus on the most. They are the gateways to the soul and are how you express yourself and communicate with others, so this is one area that you don’t want to address capriciously. Focus on an all-in-one, flattering product.

Laura Mercier Caviar Stick: Eyeshadow sticks are my absolute favorite. No primer, no layering. Just 1, 2, 3 and you’re done. The Caviar Sticks from Laura Mercier are definitely a luxury, because of the gorgeous shades that wear beautifully throughout the day. It’s minimal effort and maximum return.

Urban Decay Moondust Eye Shadow: Going out after work? Take your favorite Moondust Eye Shadow from Urban Decay to work to transform your day look into an evening look. These shadows offer an incredible effect that is so sultry and sexy, and the color range is just perfect.

Concealer/Under Eye Darkness: This area is a major issue for a lot of women, and until you have found an amazing concealer that works for you, you’ll never truly understand how this little step can change your life. You will look youthful and awake, thanks to a simple swipe of concealer.

Laura Mercier Secret Concealer: In my opinion, Laura Mercier’s is one of the best concealers ever formulated. Secret Concealer covers darkness but literally brightens under the eye, plumps out lines, and sets to a perfect satin finish. Nothing is worse than a concealer that is too dry or too wet. I never even have to set this with powder on myself or my clients.

Brows: It’s helpful to know that brow products come in a few variations, for all kinds of hair types and effects. There are gels with a small mascara wands, pencils, and cream products that you can brush into brows.

L’Oreal Brow Stylist Designer: Pencils are great for hairs that need to be drawn in or filling bald spots. I love the soft effect these pencils give. Some pencils are too heavy, giving you that Groucho Marx look, or they are so drying that they drag the skin. L’Oreal Brow Stylist Designer pencils have a spoolie so you can brush out for an even more natural effect.

L’Oreal Brow Stylist Plumper: I love to pair my pencils with brow gels and I suggest a little swipe on a tissue before applying to ensure the right amount of product is used. Gels are perfect for unruly or too thin brows.

Lips: This is the feature that allows you to let go a little. Lipstick is quite forgiving. Of course you would like something that you will feel comfortable in at work. There are endless amounts of options for lips such as sheer, glossy, creamy, bold, matte, satin, tinted, and long-lasting. The right shade with change your life.

NARS Sheer Lipstick: NARS is always on point with an arsenal of colors. The Sheer Lipstick has the perfect amount of hue. The color and conditioning effect will make you look current and awake even in those too-long meetings.

Paula’s Choice Resist Anti Aging Lip Gloss + Broad Spectrum SPF 40: Paula’s Choice is my favorite skincare brand in the world, so when they released makeup products formulated with their impeccable standards, I knew I had to regularly incorporate them into my beauty routine. The high SPF will help those puckers remain young, line free, and they also work great as a lipstick primer if you blot first.

Lashes/Mascara: The easiest way to awaken the face is with mascara. Just understand what you need. Do your lashes need length? Volume? Color? All of the above? Thank God there are options.

Paulas Choice Fantastic Lash Mascara: Paula’s Choice Fantastic Lash Mascara is an easy-to-apply lash-lengthening mascara that coats and separates lashes for a stunning fan-like effect. There are no clumps, smudges, or flaking. Ever. I like to apply on top of my lashes first, followed by under, then by curling them again above and under with the wand.

Blush: Some love it. Some hate it. Some just don’t need it. Either way, it should never overpower your face and texture is key.

Shu Uemura Tint In Gelato: A brilliant multi-purpose product that is equally perfect for lips or cheeks. The Shu Uemura Tint in Gelato is divine with its delicate touche of color. The texture is like air: mousse-y, light, creamy, fluffy… extraordinary.

Paula’s Choice Blush It On Contour Palette: This is master blush palette with superb shades at a great price. I would seriously recommend this palette to any makeup artist or person who likes blush since it’s a limited edition. These six exclusive shades are perfect for adding color to the skin, contouring the face, and awakening of your complexion. With a silky bronzer and a luminous highlighter included, you can do it all.

Finishing Touches (Bronzer/Contouring): I recommend finishing off any look with bronzer, highlighter and/or contouring for a more polished look.

NARS Laguna Illuminator: Radiance is everything. You can get the best of everything by mixing a drop of Laguna into your foundation or by applying it after, like a warm and sunlit highlighter.

Too Faced Cocoa Contour: Yum! The Too Faced Cocoa Contour palette smells decadently like chocolate and is arranged to perfection with two essential sculpting shades. This is perfect for a the contouring beginner or if you just want all of your powders together in one palette. Everything is put together perfectly with expert instructions to help you along your way to sculpted perfection.
