Summer is festival season, drawing outdoor crowds for music, arts, crafts, and other forms of entertainment. As a native New Yorker, I can tell you that some serious magic happens at these outdoor events, but it may not be any fun at all when it comes to makeup. The heat, humidity, and the blazing hot sun are a recipe for disaster and a makeup meltdown. Those climate factors make for a terrifying situation, no matter how much of a pro you are.
So what on earth can you do? You can make the most with the least amount… of product! Don’t wear a lot of products. There is nothing cute about melted or sweated off or smeared makeup on your face.
Start out with a high SPF, then follow my lead with my five general product picks for festival makeup.
You can do without all the contouring and smoky eyes when you are dealing with unbearable temperatures, but certainly have some fun with powder shimmers and bronzers for an extra touch of beauty. It’s all about having a good time and just enjoying yourself while outside and in nature, something you probably don’t get to do every day, and you can’t do that while worrying about all your makeup!
Again, these are general suggestions. I want you to pick your favorite formula, brand or shade, with this shopping list/guidance from me.
Tinted Moisturizer: Focus on an oil-free, matte, and/or sheer version in a liquid bottle or compact formula. It’s lightweight, forgiving, and it always has your back. If possible, grab one with an SPF factor and kill two birds with one stone.
Compact Powder: Meet your savior for any and all outside events, from backyard BBQs to all-day festivals. It can not and should not be a loose powder. There’s too much of a risk for a mess in your bag. I like to apply it with a small powder brush, which you can do with your eyes closed. This ensures that you will not look like a hot (and sweaty) mess!
Long Lasting Lip Color: If you don’t want to have to re-apply lip product all day, then just wear a long-lasting lip color. Go with a shade as natural or as bright and intense as you’d like; that’s totally up to you, since every brand has a wide range of shades to choose from. Just choose your color wisely and the re-applications will be minimal, like after a drink or when the sun goes down.
Tinted Lip Balm: A ChapStick with some color is another favorite option, because you can apply it without looking, and have smooth, hydrated lips all day. And you can re-apply as often as you like without making any sort of mess.
Mascara: Go with a waterproof version. Sure, it’s harder to remove, but that’s the point! Great lashes that don’t smudge are essential for looking your very best for an all-day, outdoor event.
