Beauty Insider: Thankful For Beauty – Makeup Tips For Holiday Gatherings

End-of-the-year holidays are a favorite for us city folk. Since Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas fall within a few short weeks of one another, the city during, this time just can’t be beat. Cool, romantic weather inspires us to look our best; I think it has something to do with the energy in the air.

Wearing makeup is a pleasure since the melting days of summer and humidity are far behind us. The end of the year is definitely a time for reflecting, rejoicing and planning to spend time with your family and/or significant other. Here are a few tips and product suggestions that could help make your holidays more joyous!

A perfect way to brighten up your look for any holiday gathering is with a colorful and vibrant shade of blush that pops. I recommend one of the limited edition blush shades from NARS – Guy Bourdin Holiday 2013 Collection in colors Exhibit A and Coeur Battant. I love the terrified look in one’s eyes when the first see the intensity of the colors. But these colors are, in fact, to die for. The trick is that you want to use sparingly and “build” the color with layers rather than adding a lot on the first try. Use a blush brush on the smaller side and tap it to remove any excess product. Think of a small circle on the apple of your cheeks instead of a large, doll-like circle. Balance with some eyeliner and a playful lip.

Dazzle up your eyes for the holidays and don’t be afraid of a little bit of color, since you can wear it in a subtle way. Try a cream or even a baked eye shadow with a kick! I recommend a gorgeous palette from Laura Mercier’s limited holiday edition Petite Baked Eye Colour Bonbon in Emerald. The colors are brilliant –they are perfect shades of wearable green, which can be worn wet, or dry. I suggest using an eye shadow primer before application. Pair with a deep pink or raspberry colored lip gloss.

Don’t overpower your own skin and keep your face fresh with a tinted moisturizer. Use concealer to brighten up any discolorations, but skip the full face of foundation. I’m really into a soft, natural matte finish right now, so I suggest Paula’s Choice’s Barely There Sheer Matte Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 30 because it’s amazing; it keeps you looking like yourself –just polished. It’s fragrance-free, extremely affordable and perfect for daily wear.

As always, don’t cross the line by adding too much color in too many places, but certainly celebrate certain features with some festive makeup for the holidays!
