Our columnist, LA makeup artist Kerry Malouf, loves clean, natural flawless skin just as much as she loves using clean, natural products. In this month’s edition of Beauty Insider, she expounds the virtues of Hourglass Cosmetics and a clean, light look and gives you the inside knowledge on how to achieve it.
“My forte is the no makeup look,” Malouf said. “When I do someone’s makeup, I only apply what’s needed to make the skin tone even. Less is more. I, of course, have my favorite organic products that I use on myself, as well as my clients. But I am always pleasantly surprised when I’m introduced to a makeup line that assists me in making my clients skin look its best. Recently, I was introduced to Hourglass Cosmetics. Their line is celebrated for its ‘complexion perfecting.’ I immediately had to give this line a try and I was so impressed that Hourglass is now a line I highly recommend.”
For the February 2010 issue of Malibu Magazine, Malouf did make up for cover model Tori Praver. Fashion editor Svetla Petkova wanted Malouf to create a natural, sexy look for the story. “To me that means clean, healthy, glowy skin, a light smoky eye and a sheer, colorful lip,” Malouf said. The look is surprisingly simple to recreate and Malouf will take us through the process, step-by-step, of achieving this subtle yet sexy look.
Malouf achieved the look you can see on the cover by hyrdrating Praver’s skin and then applying Veil Mineral Primer. “It’s a white liquid with zinc oxide, but it goes on clear. It’s waterproof and makes the foundation. By the way, it’s amazing!” Malouf then applied Veil Fluid Makeup in shade 1.5 with Hourglass Brush #2 for “soft, light look.” Malouf stressed using the brush as opposed to fingers, saying, “If you use your fingers, it makes the foundation go on thicker with this formula, so that is why I use a brush, for a lighter coverage.” She then used concealer in Pearl where needed.
For the sultry eye look, Malouf framed Praver’s eye with Visonaire Eye Shadow duo in Suede. “I love this color,” Malouf beamed. “It’s the perfect shade of smoky brown. I then lined the top lash line with Calligraphy Eye Liner in Ebony. It’s a black liquid with a pointed tip and it’s waterproof as well. Then, I applied a layer of Superficial Lash Mascara in Carbon. This mascara lengthens as well as thickens and holds a curl. It has a small brush applicator that allows for a tight line application which comes in very handy!”
The lip look was created simply, as well. Malouf revealed, “For her lips I lined and filled them with Trace Lip Liner in Secret to create a berry matte finish for some of the shots and later added Extreme Sheen Gloss in Verse, a neutral pinky brown, for a sexier pout.” So this lip look transitions easily from day to night. Malouf praised the Extreme Sheen’s consistency as “non-sticky and water resistant.”
“To finish up, I swept Oxygen Mineral Powder in #2 where needed to remove any shine,” Malouf said. She also reminds readers of the crucial, Golden Rule of beauty: “Beauty comes from the inside out and your skin reflects that. To me, makeup is used to correct and enhance what you’ve got. Beauty rest, loads of water and fish oil are secrets that we should all embrace. These secrets make your life and my job just that much easier and better.” So take those words to heart!
