Spring has finally sprung! As the trees start blossoming and the sun comes out to play, it is time to switch up your makeup looks to match the season. While finding heaps of great makeup may be easy for some, it’s often a more challenging task for women of color. Being of dark skin myself I know this struggle all too well. Searching for the perfect shades with limited options is a difficult task, however it is achievable. There are many makeup brands who work tremendously hard to be inclusive of all skin tones. Here at BeautyNewsNYC we’re featuring two of our faves, Laura Mercier and Stephen Keyes. Their spring makeup for women of color will help you welcome spring and summer looking flawlessly fabulous!
Stephen Keyes Pore Perfecting Foundation, Rich Caramel: This foundation is superb for creating an effortless and fluid look. If you are looking for a softer appearance the delightfully light mattifying elements will work wonders for you. The gentle finish of Pore Perfection will give you a fresh and natural glow, taking you through spring and the summer months.
Laura Mercier Candleglow Soft Luminous Foundation: This product has fast turned into one of my favorite foundations. Released in January, the Candleglow foundation is a spring hit that leaves skin looking warm and gleaming even on those gloomier days. The aqua water base mixed with Radiant-pearl mica is the perfect composition for divine skin and a sun-kissed glow. I was delighted to find out that is also suitable for sensitive skin. I tried the Truffle shade and found it looked its best when I applied it with a sponge. I was pleased with how many compliments I received about my smooth skin when I wore it. It is excellent for those wanting flawless medium coverage and with 24 shades available there’s bound to be one for you.
Available: Neiman Marcus
Stephen Keyes Baked Blush: Nectar is the ideal spring hue and it looks great on chocolate skin! It is excellent for adding a bit of sparkle to your everyday look. I found the blush was best applied with a brush and blended quite well. It is extremely buildable but if you want a delicate look you need only apply a small amount for your cheeks to twinkle! The compact blush leaves you with a matte finish so I would suggest wearing it with Stephen Keyes Pore Perfecting Foundation to achieve the optimal look.
Laura Mercier Secret Concealer: The warm concealer can be worn both day and night and is packed with Vitamin A and E goodness. Using your fingers, the concealer effortlessly glides on so you do not need to apply much. There are 12 shades available for a wide range of complexions. I tried #7 which ended up coming out darker than I had expected, so be sure to play around with the colours before you make that final purchase!
The Secret Concealer leaves a beautiful glazed look underneath your eyes so if you are after something less polished, try the Laura Mercier Invisible Loose Setting Powder with it too. This powder works wonders on all skin tones and will not leave you looking cakey either. Apply it sparingly on top of your concealer with a fan brush for a flawless oil-free finish.
Stephen Keyes Octoberfest Trio Kit: The amazingly talented makeup artist Stephen Keyes also happens to be just as good of an illustrator. When I opened my Octoberfest Trio Kit I was pleasantly surprised to find a beautifully drawn illustration and “How to” chart included. With a medium toned brown, darker brown and high shimmer shade you can vary your look every time you use the kit. The sheer satin shadow also does an outstanding job at creating accents and highlighting. Apply with a brush and wear on a girl’s night out or date night.
