Travel the World through Scent with Ormonde Jayne

Ever have the urge to travel far and wide, indulging in delicious new foods and seeing areas of the world you could have never imagined? It’s not always convenient, is it–so many plans to make, funds to save up, arrangements to sort. If you find yourself aching for the invigoration that comes with foreign travel but it’s just not in the cards right now, try sniffing a new scent. More specifically, try something from Ormonde Jayne’s intriguing and captivating library of scents–a collection that pulls inspiration from all corners of the world. Founder Linda Pilkington herself traveled extensively as a young woman, even setting up an ice cream parlor in South America that offered creative, distinctive flavors inspired by her findings. This British niche fragrance house offers unique and often surprising scents that won’t have you smelling like anyone else around you.

I had the pleasure of sampling one of the brand’s tasting menus. Testing the little perfumed vials felt like gallivanting around the globe, across seasons and time–and I didn’t have to leave my home. Here are the standouts.

Damask is a floral gourmand with notes of rose, blackcurrant, pear, and lemon. On me, it’s a deep, spicy, sweet rose. It reminds me of the dried roses atop the latte I drank the other morning–sweet, a bit flowery, a bit gourmand. Fans of Parfums de Marly’s Delina will love this.

Levant is a flirtatious floral concoction of peony, orange blossom, and rose petals. Sweet and slightly citrusy, it makes me think of a candied orange in the summertime, or the delicious orange blossom syrup one might find in a specialty cocktail or dessert.

Osmanthus is a citrus floral made up of its namesake flower, as well as pomelo, water lily, and Indian jasmine. It’s fresh and lively, and when I smell this, I instantly think of an outdoor picnic–think a crunchy, fresh green salad topped with citrus fruits, accompanied by a glass of white wine.

Isfarkand is an addictive citrus and woody scent that, upon first spritz, smells exactly like freshly cracked pepper. Its notes are pink pepper, lime, mandarin, and cedar wood. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever smelled before–which always makes me smile.
