At Last, A Retreat for the Sensitive Ladies of the Big, Bad City…

VMV Hypoallergenics is opening their very first U.S. store/spa, right here in NYC on the cusp of the Flatiron district. For those of you who are not familiar with the brand, VMV Hypoallergenics is THE gold standard for makeup and treatments for those with obscenely sensitive skin. I am an Irish redhead whose skin has never been able to tolerate makeup (and trust me, as an actor, this has caused much suffering). What makes all of their products unique is that they were created by internationally renowned Dr. Vermen Verallo-Rowell, who is a dermatopathologist, as well as a dermatologist.

Every product is free of the 76 known allergens listed by the North American Contact Dermatitis Group. The brand is committed to reformulating its products if anything becomes known as or identified as an allergen, making it ideal not just for the delicate skinned among us, but for the sufferers of such skin conditions as rosacea. As a matter of fact, when I met with Dr. Verallo-Rowell’s staff, one staff member claimed to have rosacea but I honestly couldn’t tell as we were trading war stories. As you know, this beauty writer loves her makeup, but can’t tolerate anything!

Of course, the spa is geared towards pampering and fun and anyone who wants beautiful skin. I adored the cheery atmosphere and sense of fun that permeated the place. It’s also well stocked with products should you fell like stopping by and playing with lip gloss! The makeup is so luxurious that it in no way feels medicinal or “good for you”. The colors are clever and bright, and special attention is paid to the brushes and how they glide across the skin. No detail went unnoticed.

The lead aesthetician is a charming woman named Melissa, who started out as a makeup artist, but realized makeup needs a beautiful palette. She has worked for such names as AmorePacific and Fresh. Her training includes being trained in the Philippines under Dr.Verallo-Rowell. She personalizes each regimen. So, as impressive as all this is, my impression was actually more of warmth and care regarding how to take better care of yourself. And that is why I will be going back.
