Sofitel New York kicked off French Restaurant Week with a fabulous soirée at the hotel’s Gaby Restaurant. The week long celebration of French Culture and France’s Independence Day began in 2011 and coincides with Bastille Week. The French have contributed a lot to this world from clothing to music and art, but this week celebrates their culinary expertise: It runs from July 13 thru 19. Come out and celebrate their red, white and bleu. Here is what you need to know.
Described as one of the top New York French restaurants, Gaby blends classic French cuisine with an American twist. Under the leadership of Executive Chef Sylvain Harribey, two prix fixe menus will be offered this week. Dine in the attractive bistro reticent to the days of Toulouse-Lautrec on various French delicacies like Foie Gras au Torchon, Petite Tuna Niçoise, Steak Frites or Filet Mignon. The menus also include superb desserts like Canellés Bordelais and Créme Brulée.

I miss the days of peasant food at Les Sans Culottes and the best Mussels Dijonnaise I’ve ever tasted occurred at Rue 57 with their peculiar Asian inspired French menu. I also miss seeing Jean-Claude Baker at Chez Josephine. But this week is about new beginnings, celebration and inspired cuisine as well as the chance to shout, “Vive la France!”
