Fashion Week 2012: Effortless Cool at J. Mendel

Designer Gilles Mendel’s Fall 2012 collection for J. Mendel was breathtaking, complete with his signature fur accents and coats. It was not your every day wear on the runway, but the hair and make-up at J. Mendel has my vote for the most wearable.

“The inspiration is a young woman going out for the evening,” said lead hair stylist Orlando Pita for To get this day to night look, Pita said he first applied Phyto Professional Intense Volume Mousse and then used the T3 Featherweight dryer to blow-dry the hair. Once it was dry he used the T3 Single Pass Twirl Professional Curling Iron, which has a large barrel, to create soft waves. The hair was then brushed out and teased but “not too bed head,” Pita said. This look can be achieved on any length or style hair he told me. “We kept them as individual women. One girl has bangs, another girl has short hair, so we are keeping the hair but adding waves,” said Pita.

This style is clearly a winner for all hair shapes and lengths and can even be worn in the day and touched up to increase volume and wave for night.

The make-up by Charlotte Tilbury for Maybelline was decidedly understated and also wearable for day or night. Even before any make-up was applied, skin preparation was the first step. Dr. Jart Beauty Water Fuse Beauty Balm was massaged onto each model’s face ensuring that her skin was hydrated and primed for the make-up. “I like to think of it as air conditioning for the face,” said make-up artist Joy Fennell.

With a fresh, hydrated palate, Tilbury was ready to apply the make-up. She said that the girls were designed to look “effortlessly cool.” In order to get that look, she only used Dream Nude Airfoam foundation in spots where it was needed, rather than all over. Tilbury used Master Shape in Deep Brown on the eyebrows, and on the eyes Master Drama in Bold Brown was used to line the eyelids and under the eyes. Collosal Mascara was applied to the lashes. The cheekbones were highlighted to give the skin a natural glow. The lips were neutral in Beige for Good Lipstick.

Even the nails were ultimately everyday courtesy of Haven Spa for Essie in Essie’s Mademoiselle, a light pink shade that’s a favorite of many working women. Now, if only we could all slip into a little J. Mendel gown, we would look Marvelous!
