Green Ale Alternatives

When celebrating St. Patty’s Day, everyone knows the drink of choice is Irish green ale. But if you want to go against the grain this year, here are a few nontraditional CP picks for you.

Westside Manhattan
From: The Spirits of Ireland, by Ray Foley

The main ingredient of this drink is Irish, but the name and attitude…all New York.

2 ounces Tullamore Dew Irish whiskey
A splash of sweet vermouth
2-4 drops Angostura bitters

Mix in rocks glass with ice.

SKYY Shamrock Smoothie
From: SKYY Spirits

Yes, this is a margarita. And yes, St. Patrick’s Day is supposed to celebrate Irish, not Spanish, culture, but we did say “nontraditional.”

2 ounces SKYY Melon
1/2 ounce triple sec
A splash of orange curaà§ao
Juice of 2 limes

Pour the ingredients into a shaker with ice cubes. Shake until frothy. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. You can also blend this cocktail with 3/4 cup ice in a blender and serve and/or rim the glass with salt.

Green Punch

This non-alcoholic drink is perfect for the family celebration.

2 (3 oz.) packages lime flavored gelatin mix
1 quart hot water
1 (46 fl. oz.) can pineapple juice
2 (12 fl. oz.) cans frozen orange juice concentrate, thawed
2 cups white sugar
4 1/2 cups cold water
2 liters ginger ale

In a large saucepan dissolve the gelatin in one quart of hot water. Allow to cool. When gelatin is cool, pour into a large punch bowl. Stir in pineapple juice, orange juice concentrate, sugar and four 1/2 cups of cold water. Pour in ginger ale just before serving.
