MAMO is, in a word, exquisite. From the moment you ascend its gorgeous tiled steps up to the airy, modern dining room, you’re enveloped in a cloud of friendly faces, efficiency, and quality fare. Envision an aesthetic of white marble, delicate mosaic tiles, and retro Italian and French film posters to transport you to Antibes via Soho. The atmosphere is every bit as relaxed and convivial as the South of France, and simultaneously as upscale.
MAMO offers a selection that can appeal to everyone: Pizze, Antipasti, soup, Risotto “Vialone Nano,” Insalate/Salads, Pasta, Carne/Meat, Pesce/Fish, Contorni/Vegetable Sides, and Desserts. Sample the Risotto with fresh market truffles, pizza with parmesan, cantal cheese & fresh truffle (Facaccia al tartufo) — or the Eggplants alla parmigiana (Melanzane alla parmigiana), or Calamarata (fried squids) for starters, followed by a salad. The Carciofi salad (artichokes, radicchio and shaved grana cheese) is incredible, as is the house special: spaghetti with anchovy butter and black caviar. Yum!
Perfectly al dente pastas include lasagna alla Bolognese, rigatoni with beef meatballs, spaghetti with crisped bacon, penne with lobster sauce, spaghetti with clams, homemade gnocchi with meat sauces, and ravioli with fresh truffle. They’re all fresh, beautifully plated, and well-balanced with their unique flavors and additions.
Meat dishes are remarkably inventive and evocative of the region: rabbit with spinach and fois gras, Milanese veal chops, free-range organic chicken, lamb chops, an 8-ounce tenderloin with porcini mushrooms, pan-fried veal kidney with a Cognac sauce, and the wagyu beef MAMO burger with truffles and fois gras, served with MAMO’s house gravy. Fish lovers can revel in MAMO’s offerings of sea bass with ratatouille, sea bream on fresh vegetables, baked Dover sole with spinach and parmesan, fresh halibut baked in foil with truffle, and wild salmon with cauliflower puree and market broccoli.
The sides are a treat (and meal!) in themselves, and arrive freshly cooked in a pan; they include Provencale-style Caponata (diced to perfection), stir-fried spinach, French Fries, and mixed vegetables in olive oil. Don’t pass on the desserts at MAMO, as they’re well worth it… and include Cheese Cake with Lavender, Tiramisu, Apple Sponge Cake with chocolate crème anglaise, chocolate mousse, and – at least when we were there – a delectable red velvet cake with creamy vanilla frosting that wasn’t listed on the menu. Cap everything off with a post-prandial brandy, port, espresso, cappuccino, Limoncello or other liqueurs from MAMO’s full bar.
The wine selection is also sure to please all palates and budgets, and cocktails are mixed with aplomb. MAMO is open for lunch as well, and offers a regular lunch menu in addition to a Lunch Prix Fixe (take note, especially if you work in Soho, the west village, or Tribeca).
