Vodka is a drink that originated in Eastern Europe — think chill if not a welcomed blast of cold. It’s just what we need at the end of summer. The name vodka stems from the Russian word ‘voda’ meaning water or, as the Polish would say ‘woda’. They continue to battle over who created it first. We don’t care. We simply enjoy it and while some Europeans down it straight like water, we love to make cocktails with the various brands and sip the sunset away.

Following are a few suggestions for the Mixologist at your favorite local watering hole.

reyka

From the land of volcanoes and glaciers, Iceland, we selected Reyka Vodka for the crisp arctic waters and abundant lava rocks that inspire and infuse the liquor. Our version of the New Earth cocktail includes 2 oz of Reyka Vodka, .75 oz of freshly squeezed orange juice, .75 oz of simple syrup, shaken and strained into a chilled coupe glass then garnished with orange peel and a dash or orange bitters — a citrus nirvana. Ask for this at The Palm.

bellion

Bellion Vodka is created with NTX and claims of being the world’s first Functional Spirit. They use the most innovative technologies, pharmaceutical standards and techniques to create the next generation of alcoholic beverages, a whole new category where science meets spirits: Functional Spirits™. We like the idea but more importantly enjoyed mixing it with basil, ginger, fresh watermelon, simple syrup, lime juice and ginger ale. Ask for one and toast our creation at Monarch Lounge.

Allaire is six times distilled and comes in a gorgeous, sexy and sleek but also cumbersome bottle. This product from Poland is meant to be taken neat in a rocks glass but we added our spin on the vodka that has a hint of spice. We suggest chilling it by stirring over ice, add a splash of dry vermouth and strain into a chilled martini glass then garnish with a twist of lemon. Enjoy one at The Rainbow Room.
