9 Daring Fashion Icons We’re too Afraid to Imitate

Rihanna at the 2014 CFDA

Just recently, Rihanna appeared in a very scandalous Swarovski crystal embellished Adam Selman gown to the CFDA Fashion Awards imitating yet another daring, stylish icon, Josephine Baker. Though Rihanna created quite an uproar with the see-through outfit she wore, we cannot deny that this risk-taker knows exactly what she’s doing. Just like Rihanna, there are many other stylish icons that aren’t afraid to wear what they want, such as the beautiful Bianca Jagger, Jennifer Lopez, Tilda Swinton, Nicki Minaj, and Miley Cyrus. Not forgetting other fashionable celebrities such as Lady Gaga, Grace Jones and Katy Perry. Brace yourself as I take you on a trip down memory lane when these celebrities made fashion choices that left us in complete shock and awe.

Bianca Jagger in the 70s

If you grew up in the 70s, then you were probably watching Bianca Jagger to see what she had on next. The typical 70s fashion for women would consist of bell bottoms, hippie dresses and possibly miniskirts but not for Bianca Jagger. The turban-inspired head accessory and the glittery gloves with the revealing split top to match, were among the many outfits that made her the jaw-dropping icon she was in the 70s. Of course in 2014, this wouldn’t be seen as much of a risk-taking outfit due to all the unorthodox outfits celebrities wear now but back then it was guaranteed to have people talking.

Jennifer Lopez at the 2000 Grammy Awards

The outfit that put J-lo on the map as a “sex symbol” was the “Tropical silk chiffon Versace dress” that she wore at the Grammy Awards in 2000. Surprisingly, this dress not only boosted Jennifer’s career but also Donatella Versace, who had people skeptical of her work after Gianni Versace’s death. As much as we love this dress, no one loves it like J-Lo. To this day, she still incorporates this dress into other dresses and costumes, but we don’t blame her!

Tilda Swinton at the Cesar Film Awards in Paris in 2009

Honestly, what was Tilda thinking when she wore this gown? Between the embellishment on the sleeves and the random brushes of watercolor on the dress, I don’t know which is more appalling. But then I realized this is Tilda we’re talking about and NOTHING she wears will ever be ordinary.

Nicki Minaj at the VMAs in 2011

Wow. At first I was speechless and couldn’t even begin to digest what I was seeing. My thoughts ranged from “What does she have on”, “Can she even breathe” to “Why would she wear that” and then I realized what better way to capture everyone’s attention than displaying a crazy jigsaw outfit such as this one. Nicki knew and wanted us to say these things because it meant all eyes were on her. She was more than embracing her “Harajuku Barbie” phase of life and although we hated everything about this distracting outfit, we have to give it to Nicki Minaj because we were still talking. Today, we’re more than happy that she traded this style for the more “natural look” she is rocking now.

Miley Cyrus in Marc Jacobs at the Fashion Group International Awards in 2013

Here I am speechless again, but this time for the right reasons. Miley manages to show off a humble amount of skin compared to what she usually gives us, in a graceful way. This is the Miley we love to see, sexy but still classy. She is exuding confidence and it only helps that the color of this gown compliments her complexion. Celebrity outfits’ are either hits or misses but Miley definitely takes a win for this one. Let us clap for this moment and hope it’s here to stay.

Lady Gaga in Alexander McQueen at Video Music Awards in 2010

Gaga never disappoints us with her absurd outfits. Still remaining her eccentric self, she manages to pull off a striking look. The dress is very lovely and flows beautifully not making it hard for Gaga to become a queen in McQueen. If only she traded the Cotton candy hair for something more calm but all the same striking like jet black hair. But we can only do so much with Lady Gaga.

Grace Jones in ALL black leather at the Grammy Awards after-party in 1983

It shouldn’t come as a surprise to you when I say that “Grace Jones” is an inspiration to many people and one of those people is “Lady Gaga”.  I can definitely see the similarities between them. Now where did she go wrong with this outfit? First, Grace’s attempt to wear the traditional Chinese clothing unfortunately did not turn out so great. Second, the makeup she’s wearing, oh the makeup, between the violet eye shadow and the rosy blush on the cheeks, I don’t know which is more disturbing. And last but not least, the leather, anyone can pull off leather on top of leather but Grace sadly did not do that here. She wore all black leather and I can’t help but sweat for her. The assemblingis so bad, I can’t take it seriously.

Katy Perry grabbed eyes wearing this “Priscilla Presley” inspired gown at the Grammy Awards in 2013

Katy Perry stunned us in this green gown she wore at the Grammy Awards in 2013. She left the usual rainbow and candy outfits that she trademarks at home and decided to dress in a more graceful tone and we’re glad.  Katy also gave us sex appeal by showing us a bit of cleavage and wearing a fitted gown that flows at the end. We love that she didn’t over-accessorize being that the only jewelry she wore was a ring and the gems on her dress as a necklace. The hairstyle and hair color complimented her look and we give her an overall 10!
