Pinterest’s 2017 Wedding Report found that brides are ditching classic red lips for a berry-toned pout. “Berries are the perfect compromise between a red and a pink lip for your wedding day. It’s just enough color to complete your whole bridal look and create a perfect marriage of the face between eyes, blush, and lips,” explains Elena Miglino, Smith & Cult Beauty Ambassador. And the hot wine hue just happens to be perfect for fall.
Love the idea of a fresh, romantic berry lip for your autumn wedding? “The best shades of berry are rich in blue undertones. They make whites look whiter, so these shades will brighten up teeth and eyes with all skin tones, especially when you’re wearing white,” says Laura Geller’s Global Artistic Director, Ashlee Glazer.
Choose a long-wear formula, as touching up your makeup probably won’t be top of mind once the festivities begin. Additionally, a matte, cream, or stain texture is best, Glazer points out, to avoid leaving marks on your champagne glass – and your groom! “A berry gloss is gorgeous,” acknowledges Glazer, but make it your pick for your bridal shower or the rehearsal dinner instead.
Finally, narrow the options further by sizing up your skin tone:
Fair: You don’t need to go bold to make a big impression on your big day. “I love soft plum, like Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Perla, on a fair-skinned bride. It adds just a flush of color to the lips,” says Miglino. Get it at Stila.com. Lipstick Queen Saint Berry is 10% pigment, another understated-yet-fabulous plum. LipstickQueen.com sells it directly, along with the other sheer shades in the Saint line.
Medium: “Go a little brighter, and more pinky red,” suggests Glazer. BareMinerals Matte Liquid Lipcolor in Naughty fits the bill. It’s found at BareMinerals Boutiques, Sephora, and Macy’s.
Also, take a look at Jane Iredale Just Kissed Lip Plumper in Paris. It’s the perfect berry with a bit of kick. Order at http://www.JaneIredale.com.
Olive: “A mulberry or raspberry is beautiful,” says Glazer.
Laura Geller Iconic Baked Sculpting Lipstick in Mulberry Street, sold on

“On olive skin, you want something with a little warmth to it. Sometimes it can be tricky, but I found that Smith & Cult The Tainted Lip Stained Flatte in Demon Dazed is perfect.” Find it at http://www.SmithandCult.com.
Dark: Think deep violets. “I am so obsessed with a magenta on dark skin,” says Miglino. “I think it adds the perfect amount of pop!” Urban Decay Vice Liquid Lipstick in Big Bang will have all eyes on you.” It’s at http://www.UrbanDecay.com.
Inglot HD Lip Tint Matte is specifically made to be transfer-resistant. Check out shade no. 15 at http://www.InglotUSA.com.
Of course, there is a lot of variation in skin tones beyond the four types, so these ideas are just a starting point. It’s not only a good idea to try out a few different lipsticks – and overall makeup looks, for that matter – well in advance of saying “I do,” it’s part of the fun.
