Zang Toi’s NYFW, AW/2016 Collection was inspired by his travels this winter to the French Alps in Courchevel and to Paris, France. I followed his journey on Instagram through the snow-covered mountains of Courchevel, to the ornate, chandeliered hotels and restaurants of Paris, imagining the sketches that Zang Toi was making. Dedicated to the tragedy that occurred in Paris, Zang Toi’s collection did not disappoint, and the hair, make-up and nails perfectly complemented the elegant designs.

The runway show began with all black ski inspired pants and jackets, then changed gears to glamorous day and evening wear, punctuated with shades of red, purple, fuschia as well as gray and black in textured brocade fabrics, lace, fur, feathers and sumptuous beading.

The hair for most models was in a “Courchevel Chignon,” which lead stylist, Eli Yamane created by separating a low ponytail into three sections. First, he blow dried the hair using Macadamia Professional Blow Dry Lotion, then parted the hair over the right side and used a large curling iron to create loose waves. After spraying Macadamia Professional Style Lock Strong Hold Hairspray, the hair was pinned back with slight curve over the left ear.

Separating the low ponytail into sections of large loops and hiding the ends of the hair inside three different buns, created the triple chignon. Once the chignon was completed more spray was added and finished with Macadamia Professional Weightless Moisture Dry Oil Micro Mist for shine.

The nails were dark with flecks of glitter that added to the drama of the collection. Zoya sent over several colors for Zang Toi to consider, and he chose Zoya Pixie Dust in Imogen, a sparkly polish with a black background and tiny flecks of color in the polish. This shade was incredible on the nails, and even though dark, it could be worn any time to add spice to any look.

The makeup by lead stylist Rudy Miles of BeautyByRudy for Ubati, was understated except for dazzling bold red lippie. Although bold, the lips seemed to blend perfectly with every piece of the collection, still allowing them to take center stage.

Once again, Zang Toi can do no wrong for me. After each show I eagerly await his next collection, thinking there is no way it will be better than the last. I am always wrong.
