NYFW Fall 2015: Harmony Reigns at The Heart Truth Red Dress Show

Despite the frenzy backstage at the Heart Truth Red Dress Show, harmony reigned in at least one section of the room. The musical group, Fifth Harmony, each in different red dresses by BCBG Generation, that complemented their youth and sophistication, brought positive, albeit high energy to the backstage hair and make-up area. These five girls (Normani Kordei, Ally Brooke, Dinah Jane Hansen, Camila Cabello, and Lauren Jauregui) were a part of the real show that began backstage with over twenty celebrity women preparing to strut their stuff for charity.

Now a staple of NYFW, the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women Red Dress Collection show helps to raise awareness for heart disease among women. At the same time the show is always a who’s who of the celebrity world, and this year was no exception, with celebrities that included, Alexa Ray Joel, Starr Jones, Cynthia Bailey, Jenette McCurdy, Kristin Cavallari, Barbara Eden, Donna Mills, Ciara, Zendaya Coleman, Hoda Kotb, Miss Universe, Paulina Vega, Tracy Andersen, Thalia, LaVerne Cox and Catt Sadler.

Backstage these women got ready for what in many cases was their first trip down a runway. Were they nervous? Some were and others seemed to take it stride. As for Fifth Harmony, these five girls not only had to take the runway but they were also scheduled to perform. The group truly multitasked with poise and grace as they were made up and had their hair teased, combed and sprayed, all while rehearsing dance moves. Looking on was Normani’s mother, who said that she travels with the group and keeps a close eye on all of the girls. Apparently, she helps to keep the harmony, and it shows.

With so many celebrity women backstage, there was surprisingly no diva behavior or drama. They were just real, down to earth women there to support a cause and to have a good time in the process. Catt Sadler of ENews ate a snack before preparing for the show, and said that she was nervous that she might trip on the runway since her gown by the late Oscar de la Renta, was so long. She didn’t, and you would never know that she or any of the other women was nervous as they confidently took the runway.

Hoda Kotb seemed to have the most fun of all as she danced down the runway to the Bruno Mars song, “Uptown Funk.” At the end after Fifth Harmony performed, Rosie O’Donnell, who had a heart attack several years ago, spoke of the dangers of heart disease for women, particularly because the warning signs are so non-specific. She used the acronym HEPPP, that described her own symptoms prior to having her heart attack: Hot (Instantly feeling hot), Exhausted, Pain (Shoulders, neck, arm, stomach), Pale and Puke (Vomiting and nausea).

It’s nice to know that such a fun show can also help save lives.
