JINsoon Hand & Foot Spa

With spring just around the corner, New Yorkers are starting to emerge from their winter hibernation. Before we know it the rosé will be flowing, rooftop bars will have lines around the corner, shopping strolls through Soho will be enjoyable and Central Park lawn space will become the hottest real estate on the market yet again. That being said, hang time with your gal pals will inevitably involve camera ready moments and there is nothing worse than taking a cute photo cheers-ing to the weekend and having your nails look a mess. If there is one thing that New Yorkers take seriously it’s manicures. Walk down almost any street and you will pass at least one nail salon. Having your local nail salon is just like having your local coffee shop, rarely do we leave our neighborhood for one or the other. However, I am here to tell you it’s time to throw on your street chic sneakers and hop on the nearest train to West Village, East Village, Upper East Side or TriBeCa for an afternoon spent at one of the JINsoon Hand & Foot Spa locations.

Jin Soon Choi, one of the most influential nail artists in the industry, opened the first Hand & Foot Spa in 1999 in East Village. After taking the NYC nail industry by storm she expanded the business to West Village where Sarah Jessica Parker was her first and now regular client. I mean if it’s good enough for Carrie Bradshaw then what more convincing do you need? From there she’s opened two more locations in Manhattan.

Taking one look at the menu of services you’ll realize that this is a full service luxury pampering. You can go in for a classic manicure or pedicure or you can treat yourself to one of the signature treatments offered. Two standout manicure and pedicure services on the signature menu is the Breath of Milk and Honey?, where your hands and feet soak in warm milk before being exfoliated with a honey sugar scrub and wrapped in a steamed towel or the Instagram worthy Flower Petal Float?, where you soak your hands in feet a bowl filled with pose petals and aromatic rose oils before having aloe vera lotion massaged into your skin for an uplifting mood boost. Whether you are looking for a total experience to moisturize dry skin or you just want a classic shellac manicure, Jin Soon Spa has an option for you.

Before arriving at the TriBeCa location I had already decided I wanted a shellac manicure with an art pattern from their list of available styles. When I arrived to the Spa on Walker street I was immediately blown away by the elegant simplicity of the spa, I didn’t feel like I was walking into any old nail spa and there was no strong smell of acetone radiating out onto the street. After being led to my seat, at the modern and chic long table running the length of the spa, I was offered a glass of prosecco and handed the list of nail designs for the season. I chose the style called “tri-me” and selected the 3 colors I wanted. The nail polishes are displayed along the wall and look more like an art display than anything else. Since I was getting shellac I had one brand to look at, but for those getting a regular manicure you’re lacquer options range from Marc Jacobs to the Spa’s own Jinsoon line.

My nail technician, Sarah, started my manicure like most with cuticles and shaping. She spent her time making sure that my nails were even and the perfectly shaped before wrapping them in a hot towel. When it came to painting she was a true perfectionist in making sure the pattern was identical on each nail. She started with the base of coral, before painting the blue triangle and finishing with the green layer. After finishing the painting she gave me a wonderful hand massage to finish up.

From start to finish the experience lasted two hours, which honestly, felt like it went by so quickly. I felt like Elle Woods going to get my nails done because it wasn’t just about the service but also a relaxation & therapy session. Sarah was wonderful and personable to talk with making the experience that much better.

When it comes to manicures, JINsoon Hand & Foot Spa is definitely an experience worth having. They take pride in their work and want to make sure you never feel rushed or just like any other client in their workday.

So with warm weather around the corner it’s the perfect time to pamper your wintery dry hands and feet. Make sure your feet are sandal ready and that your hands are always Instagram approved.
