Colorist Review: Reyad Fritas of the Frédéric Fekkai Salon

Looking for that quick, elegant, stylish French escape to lift the beginning of the winter blues? Forget the jet lag and head down to the Champs-Élysées of Fifth Avenue and book an appointment with Reyad Fritas at the Frédéric Fekkai Salon. Reyad is the colorist extraordinaire for celebrities such as Heidi Klum and Diane Von Furstenberg. Parisian, down-to-earth and charming, he is the Monet of hair color.

I am a dark brunette and have been coloring my premature 100% gray hair since I was in my 20s, so let’s just say I have tried every technique out there to cover my stubborn, coarse, white roots. Highlights! Lowlights! Blonde streaks! Glosses! And yes—I admit—the boxed hair color home job! Reyad is especially known for balayage, where hair color is painted onto larger chunks of hair. I had never tried this approach and thought I would give it a chance under his talented hands.

When I arrived at the salon, I relaxed before my appointment in Fekkai’s modern, hip and chic waiting area, while sipping on my choice of cucumber, lemon or orange water. Ariana, Reyad’s adorable assistant, led me into the gorgeous coloring area, which was equipped with computers and a beautiful long table where you can work or just relax.

Reyad took one look at my hair and said that I did not need lowlights or balayage. He likes a natural look and agreed that I was a true brunette; what my color was lacking was the proper hue and shine. He also wanted to balance my hair, because the bottom streaks were clearly over-oxidized from summer sun exposure. He reappeared in less than five minutes with his magical palette and meticulously applied color to my white roots. His brushstrokes are applied with utter precision. He is meticulous to not apply color over color, which is the reason for my everyday lackluster, shoe polish color. After about thirty-five minutes, Ariana took me back to the shampoo area and applied gloss to the roots and then a second gloss over my entire head. She then gave me a spa-like shampoo, relieving the work tension stuck in my neck, followed by a blowout that was runway worthy.

The results? Ooh la la! My new brunette color looked rich, completely natural, full of shine, and multidimensional. Reyad is an artist. If you are looking for healthy and gorgeous natural color, then book an appointment with Reyad, le magnifique.
