Recession Special: BN’s exclusive scoop on the latest and cheapest must-try fitness classes

The holidays are over, and the real freeze of winter is upon us. Aside from the weather freeze, a lot of us are feeling the cold harsh air of our bludgeoning economy. For the penny pinchers out there, there’s good news! Fitness CAN fit into your budget. BN has found two hot new steals in the world of workout glory, sure to keep you interested and on track during these harsh times.

The Body:

What: If you’ve ever craved a dancer’s body (and really who hasn’t?), The Body is the workout for you. Combining techniques from the Lotte Berk Method, yoga, pilates, and dance, the Body workout gives you a 55-minute total body workout where strength-training, cardio and dance-inspired stretches come together to sculpt a long, lean, stunning physique.

BN experience: I took an evening class that consisted of only 4 other students. Shawn, the head instructor and creative director, led us thru heartbeat raising cardio dance-esque moves, followed by focused ab-work, and ended with relaxing yogic stretches. The music matched the pace of the workout and I left class feeling energized, but honestly thinking the workout wasn’t intense enough. My skepticism was erased the next morning when I felt the post-workout soreness in my upper thighs, abs, and biceps! This is definitely a great way to get a total-body workout without the monotonous machines or free weights.

Price: If stock numbers have got you down, the fact that your first Body class is absolutely FREE should help boost your spirits. If you fall in love with the class, a month of unlimited classes is a reasonable $250.

Where: Located on the 2nd floor of 802 Lexington Avenue at 62nd street. Check for more info.

What: Whatever your style, whatever your level, you’ll find it here – YogaWorks is definitely the ivy-league of yoga schools.

BN experience: I visited the Soho membership office, a completely eco-friendly environment from the lights down to the mats, and fell in love with the vibe and the teachers’ honest enthusiasm for their students’ practice. With over 20 different types of classes, including Happy Hour Yoga and even Kids Yoga, and 4 different studios to choose from, distance or boredom can never be an excuse.

Price: One class is usually $15 but in February, in celebration of love and friendship, YogaWorks is offering two weeks for you and a friend for $30. That’s $15 each for two weeks of unlimited yoga! And it doesn’t have to be a love interest. It can be your BFF, sister, dad – whoever! Just as long as you come in and sign up together.

Looking for another economic pick-me-up? On Wednesday, Feb 18th from 5-8pm at the Westside Studio, YogaWorks is offerings free pilates. People can email for more information and to register.

Where: Check out for a studio near you.
